Does someone have a big life insurance policy on me?

Are you one of those lucky people in the path of totality who will actually see the full solar eclipse today?

path of totality

My mom is pretty close where she lives in Tennessee however, we are not.  We’ll be able to see a partial eclipse but I’m still excited about it.  If you want to know how much of the eclipse you’ll be able to see, you can visit this really cool site here.

We just got back from Nokomis last night so we’ll be watching from here.  I’m glad I’m watching it from anywhere because I was nearly decapitated on Friday.  No, really, I was.

MacGyver and I were trimming the canal from our John boat and we were throwing the clippings in the middle of the boat.  MacGyver tripped over all the brush and fell backwards with the sharpened loppers in his hand and they scrapped right across my collar bone narrowly missing my neck by an inch!

neck injury

We laugh about it now but it could have turned out really bad.  That’s why on Saturday MacGyver asked his brother to help finish the job.  I cleaned the house instead and I also had lots of help from my awesome sister-in-law and thing 1 and thing 2.

Afterwards, we went to dinner at a new restaurant that we hadn’t been to yet, and then we all went to the drum circle.  Because I live to embarrass myself and those who love me with my most awesome dance moves.

And now the family is on their way to Clearwater to spend the last week of their vacation with us.  I am pretty lucky to be able to share my birthday with my nephew.

Happy Birthday Thing 1, I love you!

Our birthday’s are Wednesday by the way, in case you want to send presents.

Now, get out there and watch the eclipse today but make sure you have the right type of glasses or use a pinhole viewer.

Boomer America

These are obviously not the right type of glasses but fortunately Boomer doesn’t give a rat’s ass about the eclipse.  Dog treats, that’s another story.  He’s open for any and all sponsorships, (and I’m not above pimpin out my dogs for early retirement), just sayin’.

Are you going to be watching the eclipse today?

Will you be able to see the full eclipse where you are?

Vacation is over and it’s bacon my heart….

Every time we take a vacation I tell myself that I will not eat badly and I will not over eat and every time, I fail miserably.  This time I decided to just have a good time and come what may.  We don’t keep a scale in our Nokomis house because I threw it out because who wants to worry about what you weigh when you’re on vacation, am I right?

diet

If you remember, I’m under doctor’s orders not to run and also I wasn’t able to walk for a week.  I extended the walking ban a bit further because hey, why not?  Based on the fact that I wasn’t doing any kind of exercise at all and I was eating whatever I wanted, oh, and sleeping in like a boss…….

I was pretty sure I gained the equivalent of at least a brain or half a dachshund, or 2 boxes of wine, or 6 packages of bacon, (which actually makes sense considering how much of that goodness I ate.)

eat skinny

We got home late last night and I stepped on the scale this morning and squinted through one half open eye to see the damage.

Lord Jesus

I weigh exactly the same as I did when I left for vacation!  If I had any idea how I managed to do that, I’d put it all down into words, write a book, and then sell that sucker and watch the millions roll in.

I wish I had a thousand photos to show you from our vacation because it was wonderful but even when I had a large part of my family over on Wednesday for a cook out, I neglected to take even one single picture.  I can’t help it.  When I’m having fun, taking pictures are usually the last thing I think about.

I did take some pictures from the week though so indulge me for a bit and I’ll share.

This is a bistro set that was brown and horrible looking.  My nephew helped me paint it and then I found these cushions on sale for half price and they matched perfectly!

Bistro Set

This is my blender which is from the 50’s, I think.  It’s pretty awesome.

50's blender

You know you want one!

My niece and I used it to bake a cake.  A blue velvet cake.

This is a picture of the cake BEFORE baking it.

smurf cake

It’s a smurf cake!  It was actually delicious according to my niece.

This is a MacGyver rescuing a gopher tortoise on Manasota Beach Road.

This is a soft shell turtle in our canal.  He is not a rescue, even though y’all probably think I rescue all of God’s creatures.

When my brother came over on Wednesday we were all standing around the canal and my brother said, ‘the water looks like motor oil.’

I think he might be right.

And this is a picture of the awesome snook that I caught on Saturday morning.

snook

We catch and release at this time of year in case you’re wondering and also, this snook is way too small to be a keeper. But I caught one!

This is a random book store that we saw in Punta Gorda when my sister in law and my niece and I went to pick up a bird cage.

copperfish books

The next day I looked it up online, Copperfish Books is an independent bookstore that sells new, used and antique books.  They also support local artists.  I am determined to make it back to this place and to visit this store.  I love independent bookstores and you NEVER see them anymore.

We got home yesterday early in the evening and I got up this morning and walked.  It felt so nice.  I’m still looking for a bike.  I can’t decide if I want to get a brand new one since I’m not sure how dedicated I’ll be to the sport.  MacGyver found some really good used ones online so I’m going to take a look at those and see if anything jumps out at me.

Also, we have to save all of our pennies right now because we have some exciting things we’re working on, but I can’t tell you about it yet.  How’s that for a teaser?

Do you gain or lose weight on vacation?

Do you like independent bookstores?

Do you like antiques or vintage things, like my blender?

Responsibility is overwhelming sometimes.

I was trying to think about what we did this weekend and what all I wanted to tell you about.  In reality, it wasn’t much and I feel like MacGyver and I are both a little overwhelmed with home owner shit and all the responsibilities.

responsibility

It must have hit us both at the same time this weekend because we had a minor roof leak that we might have ignored for a bit too long but we couldn’t ignore it any longer, so we had to go get supplies and fix it.  We ended up getting into an argument in the middle of Lowe’s over what type of mulch is better.

fighting

That’s when we realized we probably need to get our shit together and take care of some of this stuff, so we each made a list and then we compared the lists to prioritize and that’s when I realized that maybe we don’t even live in the same house.

MacGyver’s list was things like, fix soffit and fascia on west side of house and pump septic for main bathroom, repair stucco on side of garage.  My list was replace carpet in spare bedroom with wood look tile and add a 2nd bathroom in the Nokomis house, rip out extra closets in master bedroom and expand the room, buy new sofa.

not on the same page

Last week I had a total of 35 miles in my workouts.  Only 20 of those were running miles, the other 15 were walking.  I’m okay with that.  Its summer and it’s ridiculously hot so running is not really at the top of my list of fun things to do.  Some days it’s just miserable and walking feels so much better so I play it by ear.

MacGyver and I did manage to do some organizing in the man cave and since the Kid moved out almost a year ago we have decided to put back the home gym.  It’s on the list, somewhere in the middle of re-landscape the front yard and replace the rotten wood on the back deck.

At least we’re eating healthy.  Check out these kabobs that MacGyver made on Saturday.

kabobs

You’re hungry now, aren’t you?

They were delicious and the best thing about that many kabobs is that you can eat them for days!  If you’ve never grilled chicken with pineapple, try it, it’s so good.  We also added onions and zucchini but we both preferred the pineapple.  It was the best.

Last week another sinkhole opened up about 40 minutes from us.  It swallowed a few houses and boats and has put many other homes in danger.  There is a video of the sinkhole actually swallowing the home.  That is one of my biggest fears.  I never thought about sinkholes when I was younger and I can’t really ever remember thinking about them before I moved to Florida though I’m sure they have them in other states as well, but they scare the hell out of me.

I have a confession to make.  I’m a garbage picker.  It’s true.  It’s MacGyver’s fault although I may have done it once or twice before I met him.  But let’s be real, if you saw something really good and in perfect condition just lying on the side of the road ready to be thrown out with the garbage, wouldn’t you pick it up?

What if you could get something like this?

Okay, I admit, at first I thought they were stupid too but that’s what MacGyver and I got this weekend and apparently those individual cars can be worth hundreds of dollars.  We got four of them in excellent condition and lots of extra parts. Boom!  Now maybe we can pay for some of these home repairs and improvements.

What did you do this weekend?
