Some ice cream, a cupcake, and a donut all go to the pool….

I’m not gonna bitch about the heat or anything since I live in Florida and y’all are probably thinking, ‘hasn’t she lived there for like a billion years?  Doesn’t she realize it’s hot in Florida?’ and yeah, I do.  That being said, dayum, it was hot when I left this morning.  I’m pretty sure the bottom of my shoes melted off while I was out there.

I'm melting

Because we didn’t really have much of a winter I keep forgetting that it’s almost summertime and that means if you want to get your run in, you have to run early in the morning or very late in the evening and I’m a morning person, for life.  Truthfully though, I’ve been walking almost as much as I’ve been running lately and I’m okay with it.

A few months ago I took a little break from running and realized how hard it was to get in those 10,000 steps on my fitbit.  So, I challenged myself to get 10,000 steps a day not counting what I get from running.  Last week was the first week that I pulled it off for the entire 7 days!

fitbit steps

Sweet Step Success!

I never realized how hard it was to get those steps until I started tracking them.  It’s crazy hard, especially if you forget to charge your fitbit or you leave it off after you shower….I wish my fitbit would track swimming because that’s something I plan to do a lot of this summer.

MacGyver and I took a trip to Target yesterday intending to stock up on some pool rafts.  I say intended because I couldn’t make a decision.

Let’s do something fun, let’s vote, lets vote on my new raft!  Here are your choices:

creamsicle

The Creamsicle

cupcake float

The cupcake

ice cream sandwich float

The ice cream sandwich

And last but certainly not the least,

donut raft

The donut float!

Which one would you choose and which one should I choose?

The weekend and some lessons learned.

On Thursday MacGyver and I decided to pack up the doggies and head on down to Venice for the next four days.  Since the parents are in Englewood now, there’s lots of things to do and new places to explore and we needed to get to it.  Not that we were looking forward to this……

Manasota Beach

You’d probably sacrifice if you had to go down here too, right?

We packed up MacGyver’s Truck and loaded up the dogs and got ready to go.  This is how Boomer and Hank do a road trip.

Car rides make us sleepy….

And this is how Mommy road trips.

Sudoku

Lesson Learned: A 1 hour and 15 minute car ride is a breeze when you occupy your mind with some hard-core Sudoku.  Not even MacGyver’s driving bothered me. I know, it surprised me too.

I have been sick for the last few weeks. At first it was just a minor cold so I tried to keep running but by last Tuesday it was moving down into my chest and so I didn’t run at all for the rest of the week. That was not an easy thing to do but I took it real easy and I completely embraced my lazy side.

lazy

I have no shame in mentioning that I laid on my butt for two days straight and I thoroughly enjoyed it. But you know what? I got better.

Lesson Learned: If you’re sick or something hurts, rest! You’d think that would be an easy one but some people get injured or sick and keep right on running all the miles, even at the expense of their permanent health.  If your leg hurts it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize if you keep running on it, it won’t get better. ever.

Regardless of how you feel, if you have pets, they still need their exercise, so if they’re used to going on walks, then they still want to walk even if you’re sick. I didn’t feel much like walking the dogs this week so I found another way to get them their exercise and it worked like a charm.

dachsund and lab

Um, yeah, I’m pretty sure your body type was not made for this flotation device. Someone stop the lab!

dachshund on raft

You said surfing, this is NOT surfing!

Lesson Learned: Pets need exercise too. If you don’t feel up to walking them, find a pool. If you can’t find a pool, find friend who has a pool and doesn’t mind dog hair.  A lot of dog hair.

On Saturday night the parents wanted to take MacGyver and me to dinner. Originally we had planned on going to a new place that had just opened but when we got there the wait was 45 minutes so we went to another place. Unfortunately, the wait there was 1 hour and 15 minutes. The third place we went to was Pelican Alley.

Pelican Alley
There was no wait at all and we got right in and the food was awesome.  And the view didn’t suck either!  There’s nothing like eating by the water and watching all the boats go by.

Lesson Learned: Sometimes the last choice is the best choice, oh, and don’t wait til you’re starving to go to a restaurant, you might end up eating way more than you normally would. Not that I would know or anything.

ate too much

Could someone just roll me to the bed….

This morning I am feeling much better and I was able to get in 3 miles before 8am. I would have like to run more but it was so humid and hot, I just couldn’t handle it. Guess I should try leaving earlier or maybe come up with another plan.

Lesson Learned: If the weather were you live makes it uncomfortable or almost unbearable to run, and that’s what your weather is like 80% of the time, move! Or shut your pie hole and run on.

Hope y’all had a fantastic weekend.
Now, tell me about a recent lesson that you’ve learned.

The Weekend Recap with bio-hazard material.

Last Friday MacGyver and I decided to go down to Venice and Englewood to see the parents who got in to town on Thursday. They came back from Virginia to get the new house in Englewood all set up and I think they were also looking forward to some sunshine and nice weather because they’ve both been sick with colds and such since going back to Virginia in March.

Sick people everywhere
They were worried that MacGyver and I would get sick but I wasn’t really concerned because I never get sick. I was worried about MacGyver though, because last year when they came down they were sick and MacGyver got sick as well but MacGyver and I took our chances because we couldn’t wait to see them again and we also had a major project to complete.

In Florida when Spring arrives the Jacaranda tree in my yard blooms with the most glorious purple flowers. They started showing up over the last week,

Jacaranda Tree
just about the time our temperature went from the low 70’s all the way up to 87. Yep, spring has sprung in Florida!

When we arrived in Venice we quickly unloaded the car and then headed over to Englewood where we hung out with the parents for a few hours, and then we headed back over to Venice and went right to bed. On Saturday morning I got up at 6am and got ready to hit the Legacy Trail. It was hot but I loved every minute of those 6 miles.

The Legacy Trail Nokomis
I didn’t really have any particular type of run scheduled as I’m not training for anything right now, the most important thing was just to enjoy the run and I most certainly did, well except for the first few minutes when I had a little encounter with some drugged out homeless people.  (I almost ran into them as they came out from the brush where they were using the bathroom and no, not in a port-a-john.)

After running I went back to house to help MacGyver with our project. We had a large out building removed from the property a few weeks ago and we needed to put in a vinyl fence to cordon off an area off for the dogs. They guys who removed the building put up a makeshift barrier for us but it only took Hank about 7 minutes to break free and infiltrate the work zone so we had to work fast.

breaking freeWe also had to remove all of the debris that used to be the outbuilding and take it to the dump.  It’s about a 40 minute round trip and we had to go twice.  On the second trip, we saw a deer on the side of the road.  I couldn’t believe it.

In case your wondering about the project, this is a pic of the fence as it was going up. I didn’t have time to take a picture after we hosed all the dirt off so you’ll just have to imagine it. The wooden fence belongs to the neighbor so we are hanging all sorts of beach themed things on it so it looks a little nicer. The area in front of the vinyl fence is where the building used to be and it borders the dock and the water.

the great fence project
This is what I plan to do to that area and the next project we are going to tackle:

outdoor fire pit areaPretty sweet, right?  I’ll post more pictures as everything gets done but in case you can’t tell, I’m pretty excited about it.

After all the work on the Venice house, we took the dogs and headed over to Englewood. Can you tell how excited Boomer is?

Lab going swimming
He was excited for one reason and one reason only.

swimming in the pool
The pool!  Nice view too, isn’t it?

After swimming and hanging out for a while, we headed back to Venice.  Unfortunately, we had a hard time sleeping that night because there was a police helicopter flying over with a spotlight and a police car in the park shining his spotlight all around.  Since our house is right across the water from the park, we were a bit concerned, as you can imagine.  I just kept thinking that maybe it had something to do with the homeless couple I had seen that morning.

The next morning I got up and ran on the Legacy Trail, again.  It was a quick 4 miles and afterward as I headed home, I saw the homeless man but he wasn’t with the same girl.  This time he was with an older woman so I guess the previous night had nothing to do with them.   After running MacGyver and I spent some time working around the house and then took the dogs for a walk.  We walked over to the park and noticed there was a wreath hanging on the Park Trail deck.  Once we got close to it we noticed it was a Halloween wreath, weird.  As we were leaving the park, Hank stopped to smell something and I looked down and saw a syringe, a SYRINGE!

I went home and called the local police department because I was concerned a child might pick up a needle or something but I gotta tell you, I am still concerned about it.  I’m not sure what is going on but I’m going to do everything in my power to stop it before it gets any worse.

Later in the day we went to visit the parents again, okay, and the pool.We hung out for a while and then early in the evening we came back and I cooked a little dinner for everyone and then MacGyver and I headed home.

I was really looking forward to a long run this morning because I want to start increasing my mileage just a little each week so I planned on getting up really early.

But that didn’t happen because guess what?

damn I got sick
Little miss, “I never get sick” is sick.

God Bless it!  I’m going to be in bed all day so it looks like I’m going to have to live life through you today so tell me about it, please!

Are you running today? What did you do this weekend?
