I’ll have Tuesday with a side of never giving up please!

This morning I was determined to run at least 4 miles although I had already made up my mind that if I felt like it, I would run longer. Of course that was how I felt before I got out of bed.

waking up to run
First I overslept.  And then I realized my Garmin 620 was dead.

I got my old Forerunner 405 out and for some other worldly reason, it was charged. Obviously it’s been a while since I used it and guess what? Yeah, I forgot how. By the time I figured it out I was already a few blocks in.

forgot how to use garmin
The final straw was my water bottle. I haven’t carried one in a while because typically I don’t need to when it’s cooler outside, but when it’s 74 degrees already at 7am you tend to need water. I brought along my favorite hand-held bottle that my hand slips through but it made my fingers numb by the first mile.

I ran the first mile in a slow 10 minutes and the second in 9:22 and by mile 2 I was over it and I ran straight home.

I quit
But I didn’t give up.

I ditched the garmin and the water bottle and I got on the treadmill. I walked for just a few seconds and then I ran a mile in 9:49. I was feeling good so I started slowly speeding up and I ran the second mile in 8:11 and it felt amazing.

I was going to keep going but I decided not to push it since I’m doing weights today but damn, it felt good. Really good.

I kind of feel good
No, it’s more like really, really, I feel like…I feel….I sort of feel like…..

I feel great
I forgot how much I actually like the treadmill sometimes. I also forgot how sometimes just a change of scenery can make a huge difference. I also forgot that my day started out sort of crappy because I totally turned it around.  I seriously enjoyed those last few miles.

It’s going to be an awesome day! Happy Tuesday.

What was your last run like?
What do you do when your day starts out crappy?

WTF Wednesday, I ain’t going back to prison man!

This morning I ran 6.25 miles with a 1 mile warm up followed by 5 yasso 800’s with a ½ mile recovery in between, and I finished up with ¾ mile cool down. I haven’t done any kind of speed work at all since I killed my butt, (see: dead butt syndrome), so I was a bit nervous about today.

I started thinking about it last night and how when I was injured it was like being in a runner’s prison. Suddenly, I started seeing people running all the time. It seemed like everyone in my neighborhood became a runner overnight. Even the chain-smoking lady down the way started running while puffing on her camels, and the old man with the oxygen tank sped up to a slight jog. And of course there were all the regular runners out there every day….

I was forced to watch from the sidelines because, injury. And it sucked.

I couldn’t wait to start running again but I was nervous about pushing myself too hard and too fast, which is what I had done before, and it set me back and caused me to miss a lot of races I really wanted to run. It also got me more prison time….runner’s prison that is. (Relax Mom, I haven’t been to real prison, or jail, not yet.)

In order to keep from ramping up too fast this time around, I constantly reminded myself that I’m on probation. If I don’t follow the rules and the terms of my probation, it’s inevitable that eventually I’ll go back to runner’s jail and I don’t wanna go back there y’all because it’s hard core.

My average speed today during the 800’s was the mid to high 8’s and my max speed was 7:21. It wasn’t fast and it wasn’t slow but I had no pain at all whatsoever, which means I can safely say, I’m nearing the end of my probation!

Bring on the races! Prisoner number 0823 is ready to run!

One last thing, I need to say Happy Birthday to my sweet MacGyver, the most amazing man on the planet and a pure angel for putting up with me! I love you and I look forward to sharing each and every one of your birthdays with you! Aren’t you a lucky duck :p

Have you had a running injury that prevented you from running?
What steps did you take to get back out there?

How to take out a mailbox at a 6:43 pace and new shoes.

This morning was my speed development workout and I loved it! Don’t get me wrong it was pretty hard and I didn’t do the entire workout as it was originally planned, but I got really, really close, and my max speed was 6:43! Now, if I could just hold that pace for an entire mile, well then, wouldn’t that be sweet? You bet your ass it would!

Spped Work Rocks

I usually do speed development on the treadmill because it’s easier to see when I need to speed up, slow down, etc but I wanted to do it outside on a normal route with typical terrain. I wouldn’t recommend that unless you really know the route well.

It’s a little difficult to run full speed and also to keep looking down at your Garmin to see when you need to slow down. You could actually run into a parked car or a mailbox…not that I would know or anything. (FYI: It is possible for a 115 lb female to knock over a mailbox and the post with just her body, rendering it completely useless, I assure you, it is.)

mailbox down

(In order to protect the not-so-innocent, this is not the actual mailbox…)

Other than a little scrap on my right hip, there is no proof, well unless you count the city worker that watched me from his truck, but he won’t say anything because I’m pretty sure I provided him with comic relief for the entire year.

Fortunately I didn’t run into anything else before I was finished. I did trip over the curb while avoiding a peacock towards the end of the run but that doesn’t count because that’s pretty much a daily occurrence and I like to think I handle it with a little more grace every time. Pretty soon it won’t even look like a trip it will look more like this:

What? I can be that graceful!

Remember on Tuesday when I told you about the Brooks PureFlow 2’s that were on sale? Well, guess what showed up this morning?

Brooks PureFlow 2's

YES! New shoes are the best thing ever and I am so stoked that they got here already AND before MacGyver got home. Not that he thinks I have a problem with shopping or anything but he’s still making fun of me over my self-imposed Groupon ban that lasted all of 20 minutes. Regardless, this day is turning out pretty good so far…

So, what’s on your agenda for the weekend? Long Run? Race? C’mon, leave me a comment. We’re staying home this weekend so I need to live vicariously through you!

What ya got planned?
