Keeping up with a 12 year old: Tales from the whipped.

The men’s 800 meter race has been dominated by Kenya for several years so it was quite a surprise to see Clayton Murphy take home the bronze for the United States.

Clayton Murphy

If you’re in the mood for an inspirational story you might want to read how a 21 year old pig farmer from Ohio became an Olympian and won a bronze medal in a race the USA hasn’t won a medal in since 1992.  I think we’re going to see some amazing things from this kid.

While I didn’t win any medals yesterday I did manage to get up bright and early to go on a six mile walk yesterday morning and the sunrise was breathtaking so that was a win.

I probably should have gotten a bit more sleep the night before because this bridge almost killed me.

On the bright side, there's a poke stop at the top of it ;)

On the bright side, there’s a poke stop at the top of it 😉

In all honesty I can’t wait until I can actually run over it again instead of walking and I’m hoping it’s sooner than later, but we’ll see.

After walking yesterday morning and then working for a few hours my nephew and I headed out to do a bit of shopping for my sister in law’s birthday.  It didn’t take long because as it turns out my nephew is pretty observant and knows exactly what his mom likes.

Puzzle

This puzzle is awesome!

After shopping I had to work for a bit longer and then we went out to play a little Pokemon Go and work on our 23 by 23.  We found the cutest little kayak launch that I had no idea was there.

We walked a few miles and my nephew informed me that he hopes to have a six pack by the time he finishes all the levels in Pokemon Go.  He’s only twelve so I’m pretty sure he has a better shot at it than I do.

I haven’t seen a six pack in at least 10 years, coincidentally that was also the last time I drank beer.

beer belly

Kids, this is what they really mean by beer belly!

On a serious note I did earn my piece of ice cream cake from last night because between all the shopping and walking and trying to keep up with my nephew, I walked over 23,000 steps.  On a Monday.

What?  That’s crazy talk!

fitbit stats

The fitbit don’t lie!

Nope, it really happened.  It’s been a long time since the kid was little and MAN, kids wear me out!  I think I might have to borrow some more often, it could seriously whip my  butt into shape, or kill me.

Last night we had a little birthday party and celebrated with my sister in law.  Everyone had a great time.  The kids and dogs were exhausted by the end of the night.

The birthday girl!

My niece came home with us last night for her sleepover turn and I suspect the dogs will be attached to her like glue.

And with that, I’m out.  Time for a walk.  If an Ohio pig farmer can become an Olympian, I can get my butt up and walk 5 miles today, right?

Did you see Clayton Murphy’s race?

Have you been watching the Olympics?

Do you think the marathon should be run in the Winter Olympics instead of the Summer or does the weather make the race more of a challenge?

Big head, nah, not me.

If I were one of those people easily influenced by external things I’d have a really big head right now.

big head

This month is my birthday month.  If you didn’t know that you’re probably new here because I’m pretty sure I mention it all the time.  (The 23rd in case you’re wondering but really it’s a month long celebration.)  Anyway, because it’s my birthday month I’ve gotten a ton of little cards in the mail for free stuff.  FREE. STUFF.

First I got a free necklace from my jeweler.

And then I got some free lotion from Bath and Body Works.

And then I got a free eye liner and lipstick from Marc Jacobs at Sephora!

All free.

Next, I realized that according to my almost 12 year old nephew, I am the coolest Aunt in the entire World.  This all came to be because of my latest obsession with Pokemon Go.  You see, when you make it to Level 20 trainer and you have a Snorlax with a CP of over 1,600 you pretty much rock in the eyes of any red blooded 12 year old.

my pokemon go status

The truth of the matter is, Pokemon Go has made it possible for me to spend some quality time with my nephew and while we may start out talking about Pokemon Go we talk about other stuff too and I get to spend some quality bonding time with him.  That’s a win win.

And if all that wasn’t enough to make my head explode, earlier in the week the lovely Emily from Wimi-fitness.com featured me as one of the top 50 women’s running blogs to start reading now.

top 50 blogHow cool is that?

See what I mean?  I’m lucky my head isn’t huge right now and I better get to weekending before it gets that way. We’re headed down to Nokomis and Englewood for the next five days.  We’ll be spending some time with MacGyver’s brother, Inspector Gadget, and my sister in law and the kids.

Even though we’ll be hanging with family, I’ll be working a bit and I’ll be blogging, from the beach and the boat.  Damn, there goes my head….I better get out of here while I can fit through the door.

What are you doing this weekend?

Tangela Bassett

Our weekend was crazy busy with work stuff.  Regular work, work around the house, and working in the yard.   So much work.

work work work made up words

Does anyone really know the words to that song?

On Saturday I got up early and walked six miles through the park.  It was nice and it didn’t feel too hot which is funny because later in the day it was miserable and that’s why the kid and I decided to go to the mall.  It was while I was at the mall that I discovered I could satisfy two addictions at one time.

Pokemon Go mall

Do you have any idea how many poke stops you can find at the mall?  It’s crazy.  You’ll also find a lot more pokemon because people use lures at the food court.  It was awesome, I ate chick-fil-A and captured a few pokemon, even some that I had never caught before which made it a pretty good day.  Plus I scored a new running tank.

Tacos

Later in the day on Saturday MacGyver and I decided to clean out our pond and restock it with some new goldfish.  It looks amazing and our entire backyard is turning into a little oasis.  MacGyver and I have been spending a lot of time out there and if it weren’t for the damn mosquitoes I’m sure we’d be out there even more.

After we finished with the pond MacGyver and I decided to use Ina Garten’s meatloaf recipe and cook dinner.

Ina mess up

You’re right Ina I won’t because it.

She only makes iit look easy because it never is, never.  Thankfully MacGyver took over and the dinner was delicious.  After I finished cleaning the dishes the kid and I went for a quick walk.  We decided just to do a one mile loop because we both had things to do.  We walked down to the park and as soon as we turned around to head home two kids put a lure out at the poke stop in the park.

oh shit

There were many pokemon to be captured.  We were just going to play for a few seconds but before we knew it MacGyver drove up on his bicycle.  He had gotten worried after we were gone for over 45 minutes.  OOOOPS.  I’m obviously addicted.  Send help, but don’t.  I’m fine with it.  I can handle it.

Sunday morning I decided to get out early and get another 6 miles in which brought my total for the week to 37.  I’d rather they were running miles but miles are miles, right?  Besides I made it to level 17 in Pokemon Go so that made me pretty happy.  I also caught a Tangela which I tried to rename Tangela Bassett but apparently there’s a limit on the amount of characters, damn it.  Oh well, I was still able to change Drowzee to Jayzee so I’ll count that as a partial win but I’m still pissed over the Tangela.

Wrapping up the weekend last night I totaled up my fitbit steps for the week and I must say I was thrilled to see that I was over 160,000!  I’m pretty sure that’s one of my highest weeks ever so even though I’m not running I’m still getting those steps in.  And if I can do it, so can you.  You might find it easier if you download Pokemon Go….just sayin.

How was your weekend?

Have you ever played Pokemon Go at the mall?

Did Pokemon Go make you login with your google account recently?  It did for me and I had to do it or I couldn’t play.  I guess MacGyver is right, Pokemon Go is big brother in disguise.
