Snakes, birds, fireworks, wasps and thumbs.

Good morning to you.  It feels so great to get back to work after a 4-day weekend, doesn’t it?

MacGyver and I got back from Nokomis last night.  We went down Wednesday night to celebrate the 4th on the water with his parents and to get a few things done around the house.  We also did a little shopping and had hoped to get in some fishing but I have to be honest, other than heading out to the inlet to watch the fireworks, I want absolutely nothing to do with the water right now and it makes me sad, but that’s how I feel.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of bacteria in the water at Nokomis, Venice and other area beaches and recently someone died from flesh eating bacteria that she got from wading in the water here.  There have been other recent cases as well, though not as severe but I’m not taking any chances.  Period.

Fortunately, we have a wonderful trail down there called the Legacy trail and I was able to run on it quite a bit.  It was wonderful and I enjoyed every single minute of it expect for 4 minutes and 32 seconds.  That would be the exact time I froze because I ran into this guy and completely freaked out.

MacGyver said he’s a Red Rat Snake or Eastern Corn Snake and that they actually make pretty cool pets.

funny sarcastic

Pets are dogs.  Period.

At one point this weekend, MacGyver and I were driving around and we spotted a guy walking his dogs.  He had 4 doxie’s and 2 corgi’s and they were so cute that we pulled over to take a picture.

man with dogs

And yes, he thought we were weird but is that not the cutest thing ever? Those faces!

On the 4th of July I took MacGyver to Yoder’s for lunch.  He had never been there and I was super excited to take him.  Besides the fact that it’s located at a little Amish and Mennonite village smack dab in the heart of Sarasota, Yoder’s has excellent food.  I never noticed before but on the shelves they have little knickknacks and they had the Amish Butterprint Pyrex bowls.

I don’t know why I got so excited about the pyrex bowls but I did and I thought it was great that they had the Amish print.  MacGyver was not at all excited about it and thought I was weird for mentioning it.  He was more interested in whether or not the waitress had participated in Rumspringa back in the day because he thought she looked like she might have had a wild streak many years ago.  I was just very glad he didn’t ask her and made a mental note to cancel the network that airs Return to Amish.

After lunch MacGyver and I headed back to the house so we could clean up the boat and get it ready to go see the fireworks and that’s when it happened.  The dreaded fourth of July curse, and it got me this time.

wasp sting

That picture was only 5 minutes after the incident.

I got attacked and stung by another damn wasp!  Can you believe it?  I immediately took Benadryl to try to keep the swelling down but it didn’t work.  And a few hours later while we were watching the fireworks, I forgot I had taken the Benadryl and that’s probably why I got drunk on only one glass of wine and took 73 pictures of my thumb.

I did manage to get these shots though.

fireworks on the fourth

The rest of the weekend was spent going to garage sales and doing a ton of work around the house.  It was busy but also relaxing if that makes sense.

Oh, and one last thing, there’s a pond at the end of our street in Nokomis and lately there’s this single wood stork who’s been hanging out there.  The last day we were there he let me get really close and I got a few pictures of him.  I call him Mork.  Mork the Stork.

Mork the Stork

Isn’t he adorable?  I hope he sticks around.  He brightens up the mucky pond.

How was your fourth of July?

Did you have a four day weekend?

Down here in Nokomis where the coyotes roam free.

Hey from Nokomis where we’ve been since Thursday nite.  We’re heading home tonight but we had a lot of things that needed to be done around here so we extended our stay a bit.  I was also able to complete the two night stands that match the dresser I re styled several months ago.

Now the bedroom feels a little more ‘put together’ and I don’t feel like it’s so hodgepodge.  I love it when things start to look like I imagine them in my head.

Not perfect but getting there….

MacGyver and I went to a few garage sales while we were here as well.  I was pretty excited to find a few great antique pieces at great prices.  We found a large metal container that I thought might have been used for milk back in the day and as it turns out it is the bottom part of an antique milking machine.  It’s pretty awesome and once I figure out what I’m going to do with it, I’ll show it to you.

I also found this beautiful little side table and I am in love with it.

Side Table

I love the cutout on the side, it sort of looks like a tulip..

MacGyver and I hauled off the tree limbs we cut a few weeks ago that have been residing on a trailer in the driveway.   I love going to the dump in Nokomis.  I’ve only been there twice but each time I saw a deer so I was really looking forward to seeing another one.  This time however, there were no deer but we saw a coyote running around in front of the Publix parking lot in the middle of the afternoon.  It was crazy.  And it was fast, too fast for me to get a picture but maybe next time.

With everything going on this week I still managed to run a little every day,  I ran/walked 33 miles last week.  I also lifted weights 5 days and did a core workout 5 days and I can now run 3-4 miles on average without taking a break.

eleven happy dance

Eleven get’s me..

It seems like such a small feat but it feels huge because honestly, I haven’t felt completely healthy in months so I’ll take what I can get and I’ll keep plugging along.

One of the people that I look to for inspiration is Gabe Grunewald.  If you aren’t familiar with Gabe, she’s a professional distance runner who’s been fighting a rare type of cancer since first being diagnosed in 2009.  I was sad to read this morning that Gabe has been moved to a comfort care center for end of life treatment.   Her husband, Justin, shared the news so that anyone who wanted to could send her one last message.

I hate hearing this news.  I really do.  If you want to send Gabe a message via twitter you can do so at @gg_runs and you can also leave a message on her Instagram account.

The purpose of life is to live it, so get on out there and go enjoy your day!

Throwback Thursday to yesterday, because I can’t remember any further

I hope you have a happy fourth of July.  We are down in Nokomis and actually went out on our boat to watch the fireworks but I’ll get to that in a minute.

First things first.  Before we left Clearwater on Tuesday MacGyver and I headed over to the lab so I could get some tests done that my doctor had ordered.

blood work

My hat goes off to the phlebotomist because she actually got my vein on the first stick and didn’t leave a bruise and that never happens, ever.  We wont get the results back for at least a week but I have a feeling they’ll all be normal anyhow because typically, they are.  I may be over here crossing my fingers anyway though because that’s what I do.

So after the lab, MacGyver and I finished up our work for the week and then hit the road.

When we bought our first house in Nokomis we took our boat out on July 4th and watched the fireworks over the Venice inlet.  We hadn’t done that since and so this year we decided it was time to to take the boat out and watch them again.

This year Danny and his sweet girlfriend Alma are in town so we took them with us.

Venice inlet

I had forgotten how beautiful it is watching all the fireworks above the water, it’s incredible.

If you follow me on instagram you probably saw the video I posted but believe when I say, the pictures nor the video due it justice I’m not kidding.  It should be on your bucket list.  Besides I know a great place you can stay if you ever come down…hehe  Hope your fourth was fantastic too.

What did you do to celebrate?
