The first piece of the puzzle, new shoes!

Last year in late October and early November I had a scary incident involving my migraine medication which forced me to discontinue using it.  For the past few years I had been getting migraines after every long run, (as well as at other times), and I was desperate to find a way to run without suffering from the pain of those terrible headaches afterwards.

I like to think that I’m a fairly seasoned runner, I mean, I’ve been doing it for over 35 years now so I’m fairly confident in my abilities and I read everything that I can about the latest and greatest in running gear so I was surprised when my physical therapist told me that along with some other strategies I probably needed to change running shoes.

For those of you who don’t know, I also suffer from scoliosis too and the physical therapist felt that running in the shoes I had been running in for the last few years were contributing to the problem.  He said that when I got tired my hip would drop on one side therefore affecting my entire posture thus contributing to my migraines.

When I was given a pair of Mizuno Wave Rider 21’s in October in exchange for my review I added them to my rotation immediately.

I hadn’t had a pair since the  Wave Rider 16’s and I loved those so I was really looking forward to trying the 21’s.  I’ve spent the past four months testing them in all types of weather, on different terrains, on long runs, tempo runs, and speed workouts and while I don’t use them for every run, they have become my long run staple.

If you’ve ever worn the Wave Rider’s then you probably have a good idea of how they fit but if you haven’t I can tell you they feel snug but not tight.  The 21’s have a bit more room in the toe box which I really like.  It wasn’t lose and it wasn’t narrow either, more like firm but true to size.  I wear a 7.5 and they fit me perfectly.

The one thing that stood out for me as different from their other versions is how breathable the 21’s are.  It’s pretty hot in Florida and I need a shoe that can breathe, the Mizuno Wave Rider 21’s were awesome in that regard.  Since most marathon training takes place in the summer, these are my new go to shoes.

The Wave Rider 21’s are lightweight but provide all the cushioning need.  The embedded Wave plate adds firmness to the cushioning and this also makes the shoe supportive so you never feel like your landing on a worn out pillow.  These shoes guide your foot smoothly and efficiently from heel strike to toe off.  I feel like that’s helped me keep my posture in check.

The Mizuno Wave Rider 21’s also worked well for me on tempo runs, progressive runs and during speed workouts but this shoe has become my go to for long runs.  I’ve already put over 300 miles on these shoes so I just purchased another pair in preparation for training throughout the spring and summer.

While wearing this shoe isn’t the only change that I made to help with those dreaded long run migraines, it certainly has played a part.  I’ll be telling you about a few more things throughout the next few weeks as well.

Do you wear several types of running shoes or are you prone to just wearing one brand and style?

When is the last time you had your running gait analyzed?

New ring, new shoes, uh, best weekend ever!

Let me just start by apologizing for this post because even though I had several opportunities this weekend to write and tell you about all the things going on around here, I didn’t. So, this is going to be last minute verbal vomit and I’ll probably butcher the hell out of the English language but if you’ve read this blog before, you’re probably used to it.

MacGyver and I are going to have a crazy week this week.  We are in the process of our closings on the houses in Nokomis.  I’m looking forward to this new chapter but also sad to be close one because I kind of feel like the Nokomis house is what started to bring our family all down to Florida and we really love that place.

On the other hand, the new place is pretty darn sweet and much bigger and I can’t wait to put my Pinterior Designer skills to work and make it really ours!  Trust me when I say you’ll get sick of the pictures.

Over the weekend MacGyver and I hit up a lot of the community garage sales and I scored some stained glass windows for 15 bucks!

We also stopped in for lunch at the cutest little café in Dunedin called Bonnie’s.  It’s a French café and they only serve breakfast and lunch but if you’re ever in the area, you should try it, it’s really good.

On Saturday we helped a friend remove some trees and limbs from her yard and then MacGyver and I chilled around the house and hung out with the dogs.  Hank is perfectly fine to hang out on the sofa with us if there’s a blanket around but Boomer steals the throw pillows and hides under the table.

Also on Saturday I got two packages in the mail that I’m so excited to tell you about.  The first is something I told you about months ago and I’ve been waiting on for what seems like forever.

Motiv Ring

That’s right, I got the Motiv ring!  I haven’t had ample time or the opportunity to test it out completely but I promise once I do, you will get a full review.

Secondly I got a little present from Mizuno.

Wave Rider 21’s, ah hell yes!

I am so stoked to run in these shoes and I cannot wait to give you guys a full review!  It may be a few weeks before I can give you the most thorough review but I’m crazy excited about it.  I love Mizuno and these shoes are so pretty and they’re the best fit for me with my hip issues.  Can you tell I’m a tad bit excited?   Well, I am!

And with that, I’ve got to run.  I have an early morning appointment.  The next time you’ll hear from me, we’ll be in Nokomis, knee deep in boxes and packing tape.  Oh joy!

What was your weekend like?

What’s your favorite pair of running shoes right now?

Have you tried the Motiv Ring?  Do you like it?
