The rest of the cabin trip

Happy Monday from beautiful Clearwater. Yep, we’re home. Actually we got home on Saturday night and then MacGyver pulled a surprise out of his hat because he had some plans for us all on Sunday so it was a very, fun-filled, jam packed weekend which I’ll probably split into two posts rather than one long one like this sentence.

I have tons of pictures and things to share with you so I’ll just dive right in.

In case you aren’t familiar or haven’t seen the cabin, this is what it looks like:

Cabin in Suburban Estates Cabin in Holopaw
There’s a lot of land surrounding it.  I know because I’ve mowed it. a lot.
It’s pretty desolate in the area where it’s located. It’s all recreational land and most of the people come out to go mudding or to shoot.

We built our own shooting range on the property but there is a community area to shoot at too.

Our shooting range

We prefer our range.

We go to the public range occasionally but mostly when we leave our camp, it’s to go driving around in the jeep or on the motorcycle or the ATV’s. We usually go visit friends or go riding with them. Hank is known as the four wheelin weenie because he loves it more than anyone.  Jeep or ATV, he doesn’t care as long as he’s on wheels.

Hank the dachshund

Hank be ridin dirty…

4 x 4 muddin
In spite of all the mud, I manage to get a little bit of glam on. We’ve got an outdoor shower and I’ve got a battery powered make up mirror and all the essentials. MacGyver and kid ridicule me constantly. I don’t care, I will tweeze my eyebrows while you play in mud!

I don’t care, I’m glampin’ bitches.

When we woke up on Saturday morning it was beautiful and cool. I couldn’t wait to go running.

cool weather

I died and went to weather heaven!

That may seem a bit chilly considering that when I woke up the day before it was in the low 70’s and humid, but it wasn’t chilly it felt awesome. And as usual, regardless of the temperature, I almost always wear shorts and Saturday morning was no exception.

Apparently there were two other runners who wanted to go running with me.

Hank my dachshund

Boomer my lab

Boomer was so excited he bolted out of the door. Hank was a bit cold so we had to put his jacket on first but once he was dressed he bolted out too.

me and the dogs running

Y’all this was heaven for me!

One of the best things about the cabin and my own trail is that dogs are always welcome and I don’t have to worry about traffic or other people or off leash dogs.  It’s what my dreams are made of. (P.S. Don’t tell MacGyver I said that because he’ll try to move us out here permanently and I’m not sure I have the self-control to deal with limited television and internet. Um, yeah No, I’m sure I don’t have the self-control.)

When the internet goes down, I be like

internet down

WHAT?  For the love of God, I will pull my hair out, watch me!

I managed to run 8.1 miles on Saturday morning and considering the trail is a little uneven and mostly grass dirt and some muddy hills, that’s not too shabby.

garmin time
Boomer got in 1.2 miles and Hank rallied for 2.4. Over the course of the day they put in an additional 3 to 4 miles what with all the chasing frogs, lizards, flies and the quick moving food that passed by their noses. By the end of the day we were all exhausted.

On the way out we headed over to the mud hole to check out the late Saturday action. I have to say, unspoiled Florida landscapes are beautiful. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a mud hole in the middle of a swamp or a hollowed out stump in a sea of grass and blackberry thorns. It’s just beautiful.

We got home late Saturday night and pretty much passed out.

On Sunday morning I headed out for a quick 3 miles and then somehow convinced MacGyver to go shopping with me. That was a mistake because he wanted to come home after 20 minutes. I wanted to stay out all night because it was cool outside and I got the chance to wear winter clothes and a new outfit that I’ve been dying to wear since I bought it in September.

new clothes

It’s cute right?

After only two stores MacGyver lost his shit and refused to shop anymore so we had to go home. It was still early and MacGyver had some other ideas about what to do for the day but I’ll share that with you tomorrow.

So now it’s your turn:
When was the last time that you went camping?
Do you prefer camping or glamping?

Friday Photos from the field

Happy Friday!  Hello from Holopaw.

Hank in the window

Are we there yet? When are we getting there?

We got here sometime around lunch on Thursday.  But then it took another 45 minutes or so to get to the cabin.

First we had to drive down this very long road,…which is mostly thick sugar sand.  Five long miles of it.

holopaw grove road

Did you notice Hank?

The road is called Holopaw Groves Road.  Groves.  As in groves full of these things,

florida oranges

Florida Oranges! So much goodness.

Once we got to the parking lot, Boomer realized we had to change vehicles.  We got out of our truck and into the mud jeep but Boomer couldn’t get into the jeep.  After some serious darn fanagling, MacGyver and I got him in.

Boomer in the jeep

How in the hell am I supposed to get in there? Did you think this through because I don’t think you did.

After we got everything transferred to our mud jeep, we hit the trails to the cabin.  It’s beautiful out here but the most important thing for me is my running trail.

I couldn’t wait to get here and trim it up.  We haven;t been here since mid October so I knew it would need a bit of maintenance.  Lucky for me, I have an ATV.  Because when you need to mow down your running path, putting your ATV in 4th gear and making over a hundred passes works every time.

Dog Town Trail

Dog Town Trail! I’ve missed you…..

And it’s fun so bonus!

We just got back from an awesome night ride after watching the sunset.

That’s amazing isn’t it?

By the time you read this, it’ll be Friday morning and I’ll be running on Dog Town Trail!

I’m in heaven right now.

Where is your absolute favorite place to run?

Where is your absolute favorite place to go on vacation?

Solar Panels, Ammo, a Telescope, our Paradise Compromised….

There’s a fine grain of shit that you people know nothing about….

In my opinion that was the absolute best line from the Walking Dead finale last night but don’t worry, there are no spoilers here, I just think that phrase best sums up part of my weekend….but let’s start from the beginning, shall we?

On Friday night, Mom and I planned on going to Venice to work on the lawn and take care of the pool at the Englewood house. MacGyver planned on going out to our cabin to finish the plumbing.

We all ended up staying home.

Apparently the interstate we take to the cabin was closed for some type of new road opening and there was a horrific accident half-way between Clearwater and Venice so traveling would have been a nightmare therefore we all stayed home Friday night.
Actually, that’s a little white lie. Mom and I went shopping. Just a little shopping, Old Navy, Bed, Bath and Beyond and a few other places. So really, it shouldn’t even count as shopping, more like running a few quick errands and finding a few cool things along the way, yeah, that’s what it was. Anyway….

We all headed out Saturday morning at the butt crack of dawn, which by definition is 5:30am. The plan was to get to Venice by 7am and hit the Legacy Trail by 7:30. I was super excited because the cold front came down and it was awesome running weather. I went over the plan with Mom a thousand times on the way down: “You take the dogs out, I’ll get ready and hit the trail, afterwards we’ll take the dogs for a walk and hit some estate sales before lunch.”

Unfortunately I wasted my breath because when we got there we discovered the guy we hired to remove our shed had already done so, and the fence to keep the dogs in the backyard had been removed. There was also the matter of all the shed contents which were all laying in and around the backyard. I couldn’t leave Mom with all 3 dogs and that mess so my run would have to wait.

We took the dogs on a very long walk so they could pee on everything within a mile radius, and then we went shopping for a few hours. While we were out, I called MacGyver. He said he hadn’t made it to the cabin yet because he was pulling someone out of a mud hole and he would call me later. I always worry when he’s out at the cabin because people do get hurt out there sometimes so I was a little anxious until I heard from him again.
When he called, the signal was bad so what I heard was, “I made it to…..and….broken out……..squatting….idiots…..cops……closed the road by……range… the power…….stolen……can you hear me?”

After I had a minor heart attack I told him that we just now had a good signal and then I asked him to repeat everything, slowly. Apparently, someone had crawled up onto our roof and smashed out a window and broke into our cabin. He didn’t notice anything missing so he didn’t think they stole anything but he was still trying to figure everything out. He said it took him a while to get to the cabin because there were cops everywhere and they had the road by the gun range blocked off due to an accident.

Now, if you aren’t aware, our cabin is in a remote 10,000 acre subdivision of recreational land. There are no power lines, no city water, no sewer lines, it’s remote… and by remote, I mean really remote. How someone managed to break into our cabin is beyond me, but as the day went on we realized they were probably squatters and they did steal from us. The first thing MacGyver discovered was missing solar panels, then radios, then lanterns, then camp stoves, then boxes of ammo. Worst of all, they stole a very expensive telescope that I bought for the kid…those Mother F*ckers!

I hope I don’t find out who you are because I will seriously hurt you.

MacGvyer’s efforts to find whomever might have broken in were thwarted however because there was a horrible ATV accident near the gun range which happens to be very close to our cabin.  FHP and the police were there to investigate and they blocked everything off.

We found out late Saturday night that an ATV had hit a Side by Side and sadly, the driver of the ATV was killed. Our prayers go out to the family. Such a sad, sad tragedy.

Mom and I are still in Venice this morning. It’s been a hell of a weekend but in spite of everything I still managed to get in a wonderful 10 mile run on Sunday and another 6 this morning on my beloved Legacy Trail.

Running always makes me feel better.  Always.

Did you watch the season finale of the Walking Dead?
What did you do this weekend?
Has anyone ever broken into your house?
