Snook fishing, a little running, a new roommate, and she said yes!

The worst part about coming home from a fun filled, action packed, awesome vacation is that unfortunately you’re usually exhausted and work is, well, let’s be honest, it’s sucky but you have to do it.

I sure miss this though…

Since this week I’m back to my regular schedule of work, work, and more work I thought I’d go ahead and take some time to recap the vacay, while I still have a chance.  When we last caught up I was on my way to a CT scan and the family was out fishing with MacGyver.  They had a very successful trip and caught lots of grouper.

During the course of the week, we also caught a lot of snapper, trout and of course, Snook.  Snook season is the reason my sister and her husband come down the first part of September, and as you can see, it’s well worth it.  Here are a few examples from the week.

In case I haven’t mentioned it before, we really like to fish in our family.  It’s a prerequisite for getting in too so don’t even think about marrying any of our kin folk unless you’re a reel fishing addict.  See what I did there?

We also like our beaches and lucky for us Stump Pass has an awesome one.

By the end of the week the girls needed some shopping time and  we thought my niece might be a bit tired of fishing so we hit up some souvenir shops and then I took them to Manasota Beach.

When we go to Englewood whether we’re on Manasota Key or at Casperson Beach I can be found doing the one thing that you can only do in a few places.

Looking for fossilized shark’s teeth.

elementI tried to take a selfie with my sister and my niece but my sister and I decided that only my niece looked good and so, I cropped us out.

KaitlinI did get a good picture of my niece and my sister later on.  You can see them here in a shot I like to call, The three monkeys.  Can you spot the third one?

3 monkeysThat’s actually my neighbors house.  He obviously has a great sense of humor.  We totally get it.

I also took the girls to Flounder’s for lunch.  We probably should have eaten inside but I wanted them to enjoy the atmosphere outside.  Unfortunately the Sons of Beaches weren’t scheduled to play until later so it was sort of a bust but I did get to play the game they have there which I love.

My niece brought her boyfriend of over two years along for the trip and imagine how excited I was when I found out that he wanted to propose!  My sister and I, (mostly my sister) got to plan it.  We got an empty wine bottle, got my niece’s boyfriend to write out the note and then had the guys drive us out to Snake Island on the boat.  My sister and I told the kids to go for a walk and we planted the bottle with the note inside and hid behind some trees.

And then…

Kaitlin found the bottleShe found the bottle, read the note, and turned around where her boyfriend was on bended knee.

And then…

She said yesShe said yes!

We celebrated the engagement by hitting up the new Dockside Waterfront Grill.

Dockside Waterfront GrillThe ring was center stage for most of the actually, most of the rest of the trip.

Dockside Waterfront GrillAnd in case I didn’t mention it, I ran two days last week.  I ran Tuesday and Saturday and both days I got three miles in.  I did end up with a migraine on Tuesday but I was able to keep it at bay on Saturday so that’s something.

On Saturday afternoon I took my sister and the family to the airport and MacGyver and I made our way back home.  We were exhausted but so were these two.

Yes, my dogs each have a bear that they sleep with.  I’m going to try and remember how cute that is because when I got back from my workout this morning, this is what I found.

dog-partyLittle bastards!

But back to my recap.  When MacGyver and I got home we realized that we have a new roommate.  He’s very smart too because he mastered both doggie doors with no problem.

squirrelUnfortunately Hank and Boomer don’t like him so we’ve had to evict him.  (It hasn’t prevented him from coming back though.)

Last thing and I’ll let you go.  I ran another 3  miles this morning!  I walked one, ran three and then walked one more.  I’m crossing my fingers that I don’t get a migraine but  time will tell.

What’s the worst thing your pet has ever done when you weren’t home?

Should I try to encourage friendship between the dogs and the squirrel or help the squirrel find a new home?

The beach, do you love it or hate it?

Catching up and catching fish

Hey!  We’re in Englewood and for those of you who didn’t guess where we were yesterday, it was Stump Pass and we had a blast.  We didn’t catch as many fish as we would have liked to but then again, do we ever catch enough?   Is there really a limit?  I think not.

Anyways, my sister and her family are here with us this week and since I’m also hella busy with some work and other things, I’ll dive right in and get y’all caught up.

First let’s talk about Hermine, you know, that little Cat1 hurricane that blew through on Thursday and Friday.  We didn’t get a direct hit, in fact, I think it never got within 150 miles of us but we did get wind gust up to 60 miles an hour and some rain that lasted for over 3 days.

Hermine rain

Do you know what happens in Florida when it rains non-stop for 3 days?  No?  Well, I’ll tell ya.  The ground becomes saturated, ponds and rivers overflow, the tides surge and everything floods.

flooding from Hermine

And then the tree roots begin to loosen and trees fall over and if that doesn’t happen the weight of all the rain on the leaves weakens the branches and they snap and fall.  Either way fallen trees is a real problem.

Trees down

And just as it all starts to clear up and the sun starts to shine you pick up all the debris and cut the overgrown lawn but just before you finish, proving that God does have a sense of humor, it starts to rain again.

rainy day

Is this my new view?

Fortunately by Saturday night the rain had pretty much ended and that was a good thing because I picked my sister and the family up at the airport at around 6:30PM.  We had dinner at Johnny’s and then the next morning made our way south to Nokomis and then Englewood.

My niece might have been a little excited…

Because fishing!

We fished all day Sunday and most of the day Monday.  I’m pretty sure if it had been up to the women we would have left for home a little earlier on Monday night because this happened:

It was pretty scary for a hot minute but because it’s Florida and the fishing was getting good, the rain let up and we stretched the trip out until 9PM.  We even had the pleasure of seeing this beautiful sight.

Today MacGyver has taken the family out for some off shore fishing and I am in Nokomis getting some work done and later I’ll be going for a ct scan and then I’ll meet up with them for dinner and possibly more fishing?

And now you’re all caught up….except for one thing.

I ran 3 miles this morning!  They were slow miles.  It took me 31 minutes and 20 seconds but hey, I RAN THREE MILES!

running in new shoes

I also got a new pair of the Brooks Launch! LOVE them.

And one more thing, the kid started his new job today!  His first day as a fraud specialist for J.P. Morgan Chase.  He’s very excited about it and I hope you’ll join me in wishing him the best of luck. Good luck Kid, you’re gonna kill it!  I’m biased but it’s true.

And now, I need to get some work done so I’ll catch up with you soon.

What did you do over the weekend?

Was it a long weekend for you?

Fishing by Viagra Falls and other things

On Saturday after I ran 5 miles, MacGyver and I put the pups in the car and headed on down to Nokomis.  Typically Boomer would be in the back seat stretched out and Hank would ride in the front because he likes to look out the window but we’ve been trying to break that habit.

I hate the back seat and I hate you.

Did I mention that I hate you?

Did I mention that I hate you?

We dropped our things off in Nokomis and then MacGyver and I went to Englewood to see his parents.  On the way over we got sidetracked by few garage sales and as we were headed to the very last one we had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting an endangered species.  I quickly jumped out to rescue it but it started peeing all over the place so MacGyver came to rescue.  In case you’re wondering what it was, it was a Gopher Tortoise.

We hung out with the parents for a while and then came back to Nokomis and watched a little TV.  The next morning I got up again and ran 5 miles and then we went to Englewood to spend the day with the parents and celebrate Father’s day.  We decided the best way to do that would be a day on the boat.

Ready for Tarpon Fishing

I love going out on the boat but it takes a while to get from the canal out to the main channel.  I entertain myself by reading all the boat names.  Most of them are typical like ‘second chance’ or ‘mystic waters’ but my favorite is the ironically titled ‘viagra falls’.

Ahead on the left ‘Viagra Falls’

The original plan was to head out to Boca Grande Pass to fish for Tarpon but that’s a long way by boat so we went with plan b which was to fish Stump Pass instead but we definitely wanted to try for tarpon.

We didn’t see any tarpon at all but we did catch some other fish and I was able to spot some Pass Crabs which I netted for the guys.  Pass Crabs are what you use to catch Tarpon.  The guys went fishing again this morning so I hope they are able to use the crabs to catch something.  A tarpon would be nice but I’ll take any kind of fresh fish.

This is a pass crab

This morning when I went to run the moon was out.

summer running

It’s summer, time to run.

I was headed out the back gate and I saw something out of the corner of my eye.  I stopped and looked around and just as I thought it was nothing and my eyes were playing tricks on me, a spider crawled out.  I told MacGyver about it when I got home and he said if I only knew how many bugs he had killed inside the house and not told me about I would just die….

I will never sleep in that house again without one eye open!

On my run this morning thankfully I saw two bunnies which completely erased the spider from my mind.

And then as I was finishing my five miles and heading down the trail bridge, I saw a centipede.  I think I read somewhere that these kinds of centipedes are poisonous but I can’t remember where I read it or if it’s even true.

You get extra credit if you can tell me what kind of centipede that is or if it’s poisonous.

MacGyver and I are headed home tonite so I’ll catch up with you tomorrow.

Tell me what you did this weekend.
