The lab test

Over the weekend MacGyver and I decided to go out to our cabin in the remote location of Holopaw.  Suburban Estates to be exact.  The original ‘If you believe that I’ve got some swamp land in Florida property’.  Make sure you click on that link after you read this post and read all about how Suburban Estates came to be, it’s quite interesting.

So we loaded the pups in the truck and we headed out.

impatient hank

Anyhow, before I was so rudely interrupted, when you don’t visit your remote cabin for 8 months guess what happens?  Go on, guess.  I’ll tell you what happens.  Grass happens.  And lots of it.  It looks like this.

the cabin.... i think

Somebody has some grass to mow, oh shit!

Somewhere in all that grass there is a cabin.

Oh yes, I believe you can actually see it now.

And then you get closer and you can actually really see it.

tall grass

The closer we got the more depressed I got. Look how tall the grass is!

Now imagine how I felt when MacGyver told me the lawn tractor was broken.

mowing grass

Can you imagine mowing all of this with a push mower?

I mowed about a half acre with a push mower before MacGyver got the lawn tractor fixed and by that time I decided I was going inside and I took a very long break.

Once inside we actually have all the comforts of home.  I have a full kitchen area complete with a microwave a toaster a mini fridge a sink and a little area to wash dishes.

camp kitchen

And in case you’re wondering, the sink actually has running water due to the water tower located outside behind the cabin.

And we have an inside bathroom too because I refuse to try to find a spot outside.  Do you know how difficult it is to try to find a bathroom while carrying around a rifle and buckshot?  Yeah, it’s not a pleasurable experience trust me.

the john

We also have a wine selection on hand.  You never know when one of the neighboring camps is going to drop by and you should always have some libations on hand.

wine rack intact.

The walls may not be finished but we got libations.

We also have television for those guest who don’t partake in outdoorsy activities.  It’s a little janky since MacGyver got a little hyped up on 7 and 7 and knocked it off the table but if you squint your left eye a little you’ll never notice.

jacked up tv

See, we have all of the comforts of home.  And it’s completely sanitary.  Everything in our cabin has been completely and thoroughly tested by the lab.

labrador boomer

Lab tested, lab approved!

And he approves of it all.

Since this was our first trip of what MacGyver and I call our ‘camp season’ we spent the first day and a half mowing around 3 acres of grass, and not much of anything else.

We did have a few moments of bon fire time at my insistence of course.  hehe

bon fire

And a little bit of mud time

But they’ll be plenty of weekends on the horizon for lots more fun.  We’re back at home now and unfortunately I ended up with a massive migraine last night so I’m recuperating this morning.  Hope this isn’t a prediction as to how my week is going to be…

What did you do this weekend?  Tell me all about it!

The trip to Dog Town, my running trail, and a few surprise visitors

It was a loooooong weekend but we’re back. It’s sort of a shame it takes so long to get to our cabin because if it didn’t I’m sure we’d spend a heck of a lot more time there.
We left early Friday to head over to Holopaw and since the ride is so long, I brought along one of my favorite pastimes.

SudokuFortunately sudoku helped the time pass and It seemed like only minutes til we were driving down the trail roads.

dirt trailsAnd then we got to the cabin.

cabin at holopawThe dogs were pretty excited. Hank may be allergic to it, but he loves grass, and Boomer loves to run as fast as he can, all the way to the bed inside.

Hank in grassBoomer runningI was afraid that I might get a bit bored at the cabin so I brought along some things to keep me busy.

Coloring booksAfter all, I get really annoyed watching the Jacked up TV.

jacked up tvI did get to run a little bit while we were there. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the amount of miles I had planned.

runningPart of the reason was the fact that the trail was a bit rougher than normal, but the main reason was a pain that I’ve recently been having in the back of my ankle. It hurt quite bad on Saturday so I only got to run 2 miles but it seemed much better on Sunday.

How can I not run on my beautiful trail?

So I got up and ran 3 and half miles on Sunday. Just before I hit four miles, the top of my heel started to hurt right behind my ankle and so I decided to take the rest of the day off. I’ll be consulting a doctor if it isn’t better soon, (and by consulting a doctor, I mean, Google.) *Please note the sarcasm.  When you have an injury you should always see a doctor, and not WebMD but a real one.

While I wasn’t able to run as much as I wanted to we were able to hit up the mud hole and also visit our friend’s camp.

This is the mud hole, it looks peaceful here but most times it’s full of mud trucks and ATV’s.

the mud holeI took this picture at our friend’s camp.  I don’t know why but it’s one of my favorite shots from the weekend.

canoe in the desertOn Sunday MacGyver went over to help out a friend of ours and I painted the entire cabin. The dogs hung out with me. Hank was catching crickets and Boomer was taking it easy.

Nobody move, I see a cricket!

Stop taking pictures peasant and bring me more of the yoplait!

While I was painting this creature jumped out of the soffit and attacked me. Okay, maybe not attacked but it felt like it. I thought it was a squirrel or a cat but it was this guy.

tree frogSonofabitch, he scared the hell out of me and I fell right off the ladder. I did manage to finish the painting though and I also finished the camp signs.

We are now officially, Camp Dog Town!

Dog Town Camp

Where are all the stencils when you need them?

Lords of Dog Town

We had to improvise but we now have signage!  And the cabin went from camo green to desert khaki, (or a nice shade of fresh baby poop depending on who you ask.)  I wanted pink but MacGyver refuses to let me bitch it up!

When it was time to leave we pulled down the game camera and I put the card in my computer to erase the images so we could put it back up. Fortunately before erasing them I quickly scrolled through them all. Imagine my shock when I saw these pictures.

The first deer came around the 7th of January.

And then about a month later, these guys showed up…

two deer

There were also a lot of night images where we couldn’t see what was there.  That’s why right before we left I poured out several cans of corn and I also dumped out all of the un-popped popcorn.

It’s all that I had and since the nearest feed store is over an hour away I had to improvise. I sure hope they come back.

I always hate leaving because it’s so peaceful here.

Suburban Estates at night

Check out that sky!

Tell me about your weekend, what did you do?
Ever had a pain in the back of your ankle near your heel? Wanna tell me about and save me a trip to the doctor?
When is the last time you saw a deer?

Dog Town Running Trail is currently occupied….BY ME!

It is Friday so I guess favorites are appropriate and I do have a favorite thing this week that I want to tell you about.

running trail

Dog Town Trail!

My personal running trail that MacGyver and I built on our property. I’m mentioning it as a favorite this week because….

that’s where I am!

And guess what….the Kid is with us too! I have all 4 of my guys with me, MacGyver, the Kid, Boomer and Hank.

jeep for mudding

I photobomb like a beast!

Oh, and I almost forgot about this new guy the guys decided to adopt.

rat snake
They were calling him ratty or snakey, but I called him a snake cab and sent his little butt packing because no thank you!  There will be no snakes in the house or cabin or Dog Town or whatever.

We got here very early Thursday morning and after the sun came up and it started to get hot we went over to South Beach for a swim. Boomer was in heaven!

swimming holeBoomer
Then we came back to Dog Town and I decided to burn some garbage that had been left around the lean to. Never let me near fire. I repeat, never ever let me near fire.

After I burned most of the garbage and a bit of old grass, the Kid and I headed off to check out the surrounding areas and look at the pond and some surrounding campsites. We came back about 45 minutes later and MacGyver was in full on panic mode trying to extinguish the fire which had already burned about a half acre area around the lean to.

No worries, we got the fire out with minimal damage but I am now banned from any and all fires, matches, lighters or flammable substances.

It’s definitely a man cave kind of cabin, but I bitched it up a little.

So, that’s what’s going on here. We’re actually coming home Friday nite because the kid has to work on Saturday and the dogs have to do some trickin and treatin. So, I’ll update again on Saturday morning.

In the meantime, have a fantastic Friday. I’m going out to run some miles on Dog Town Trail and I couldn’t be more excited…

Dog Town Trail

I love my trail! Welcome to Dog Town, I’mma eat me some miles for breakfast!

Tell me one of your favorite things from this week.
