I’m a staunch character.

Last week I walked 3 days and biked a couple of days and I’m not sure how it happened but somehow I jacked my back up.

I think it’s because I pushed the pace of my walking and over stretched and possibly strained something but I don’t really know.  It’s frustrating because I followed the doctor’s advice and yet still, I’m sidelined. I can only speculate at this point but I think my diet may have also played a role.  I’ve been eating pretty shitty and some gluten has slipped past me a few times as well.  Oh, and let’s not forget the sugar and the dairy because when I slip up, I go all the way.

like a boss

No matter, tomorrow is my birthday and I intend to celebrate like a champ, back pain or not.  I’m hoping for a Specialized bike that MacGyver and I looked at last week so let’s hope he comes through.  I have a feeling he will but we’ll see.

Did you see the eclipse yesterday?  I think I mentioned that my mom was in the path of totality and can you believe she was just going to watch it on TV?  Seriously!  I demanded she make a pinhole viewer and get out there, which she did.  She also sent me some pictures which I was going to post but I’m a little lazy today.

Instead here are a few of my pictures from the event.

Yes, that’s me in MacGyver’s welding mask.

It’s cool but still a fail….

That’s the best picture I got.  #Fail!  My almost 13 year old nephew was hilarious because we got everybody all amped up and he was like, ‘that’s it, seriously?’  And then he drew an awesome cartoon that I was going to post but again, I’m lazy.

One more thing, the boys all went to our cabin for well, boy things.  So me, my sister-in-law, and my niece are having girl time.  We went to the pet store last night to buy worms for the birds and we saw newborn baby hamsters.

baby hamsters

Is that not the cutest thing ever?

Oh and also, we were sitting on the sofa talking about something and my sister-in-law was telling me something and she said, ‘I was becoming apoplectic’ and I was all, ‘Mother was apoplectic when you went missing’ and she didn’t get it because she has never seen Grey Gardens!

Well, I know what we’re watching tonite.

Did you watch the eclipse?

Was it all that you thought it would be?

Where the heck did Emily come from?

This weekend I walked 5 miles on Saturday but unfortunately even walking is causing me a little pain.  It’s migrated too.  What started in my upper hamstring has relocated.

ass pain

I made an appointment with the sports doctor for Thursday morning so we’ll see what he says.  I’ve been running long enough to know that the problem is most likely stemming from my back issue and the fact that I sit on my ass all day working.  I mean, I have the medicine ball and foam rollers and all the gadgets I need but my posture just sucks and honestly, it’s much more comfortable to work from the comfort of my lazy boy.

Except that I’m paying for it in the long run.

Too dumb

Anyway, after walking on Saturday MacGyver and I went to a few garage sales.  We got a few good things.  MacGyver got a really cool cover from a 64 Mercury outboard motor.  I want to make it into a mailbox but we’re still deciding.

On Sunday it started raining.  We’re still waiting for it to stop.  MacGyver and I went for a 6 mile bike ride anyway because we’re not afraid of a little rain.  We also went to Aldi and I think it’s really important to tell you that Aldi now carries IPA beer!

IPA beer

I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ll let you know when I do.

I was also at Aldi on Friday night when my niece was having her gender reveal party.  They live streamed it so I was able to watch on Facebook.  I might have gotten a little too excited when I saw the pink exhaust from the truck because I screamed out, ‘it’s a girl, I knew it!’  Everyone around me and up to four aisles over clapped.

When I was pregnant we didn’t have these gender reveal parties.  In fact everyone I knew told me not to find out what the sex was until I delivered because that’s what gets you through labor, especially if you have a totally natural childbirth, and I did.  (I know, I’m a badass.)  I also had to return a lot of things so there’s that.

But I digress, the point is, these gender reveal parties are all kinds of fun and who knew you could turn the exhaust from the truck pink or blue.  Amazing.  The best part was that my niece had no idea of the gender either, only her sister who organized the party so it was really sweet.

I was thinking of buying this for the expecting mom but it might be too much.

baby prison

I was planning on a really easy walk this morning and since it rained all day yesterday I checked the weather radar late last night and it looked like there might be a break in the rain early this morning.  I laid out all of my clothes so everything would be ready and then when I woke up this morning I turned on the news.

Somehow, over night a low pressure system turned into this!

Yeah, so there’s that.

How was your weekend?  Did you do anything exciting?

I’m back with a pain in the neck.

Last Friday morning I ran 5 miles around my neighborhood.  It wasn’t uncomfortable, it didn’t feel like I pushed too hard and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I’m glad that I did because it might have been the last run for a bit.

sad face

Last week I got the results of my last two MRI’s.  My thoracic MRI wasn’t too bad, just a few stressed areas but nothing in the spine that looked too bad.  My cervical MRI results were two pages long.  Two. Flipping. Pages!

I’ve got Cervical Osteophyte Complex and severe foraminal narrowing plus other shit that I don’t even understand.  It’s not pretty.  And to make matters worse I’ve had serious pain (in the neck, literally) all weekend long.  I was able to walk and so I did.  I walked 9 miles total on Saturday and Sunday morning and the Kid and I walked several miles in the evening while playing Pokemon Go.

I see the neurologist again in mid-August and I’ll be able to talk to him about a plan of action.  I’m confident we can get my lower spine back to a manageable level but I’m worried about the upper spine.  There are multiple bone spurs and disc problems as well as the nerve issue.  I’m also really worried about another thing they found that has nothing to do with the spine and I’ll be having a CT scan this week to determine how serious it is.   I don’t know too much about it and I’m not ready to share just yet but I will once I know something.

Anyway, as you can imagine, I’ve been a little stressed over the whole thing.  The good news is, my lawn has never looked so good.

I replaced the old single brick row with this retaining wall.  It’s not really brick but I think it looks pretty cool and it’s much easier to clean and care for.

lawn work

When I’m stressed, I garden, I weed, and I prune.  I like to put my hands in the dirt.

As proof, check out the palms and plants in the front yard with their new border.

front yard decor

And this new little display that I built in the backyard using old stuff that was just laying around.

And I finally found a use for my new bench.  MacGyver and I went to Home Depot and got a few stone pavers and built a little patio for it.

Obviously I was more than a little stressed!  I got a lot done.  I probably did more yard work in two days than I’ve done in six months!

I did walk the dogs quite a bit this weekend too.

I’m always up for a walk and kisses, I love kisses!

I’m perfectly happy here on the sofa but I’ma need some more pillows.

And of course I cant run right now so it makes perfect sense that this would show up:

pink fitbit

The replacement!

I’m also almost to level 9 in Pokemon Go but more importantly the Kid and I are spending a lot of quality time together and seeing things like this.

broken tree

This was a huge tree that had been hit by lightning and was still stuck in the power lines.

And we got to meet this guy, but don’t worry we didn’t get close.

Gator Glen

And that’s what’s going on around here.

I’m wondering for those of you who suffer from neck or  back pain, what types of exercise are you able to do that is effective yet doesn’t cause pain or risk further injury?
