‘Not Guilty’

Yesterday morning I really wanted to run the Legacy Trail once more before leaving Nokomis but then I had to motivate myself because I ate ALL the things in the fridge the night before.  Why is it that when you know you’re leaving some place and there are left overs in the fridge you are determined to eat them all?  Why can’t you just throw them out?  Or is that just me?

Snaccident

Anyway, I finally got my ish together and got out the door.  It was easier than I thought because once I started running I felt fine but isn’t that always the case?  Anywho, I made it to the trail head and then turned left and ran toward the bridge over Shakett Creek and soon realized that the North portion of the trail was closed.  As in closed which meant I had to change my course.  Damn.  I almost said screw it and gave up, instead I turned around and went South.

Then I realized I would have to run over the steep highway 41 bridge, it’s short but steep.  UGH!

complaining runner

This is totally me

I ran anyway and the great part about running on this part of the trail is that it turns into the Venetian Waterway and you get to run along the canal.  Since this was a casual run I decided to take a few pics for you.

venice canalVenice waterwayThe building to the right is Venice High School.  If you went to school there, please for the love of God tell me how you managed to graduate.  I would have played hooky every day and ran the trail and then fished in the canal.  Every. Single. Day.  I wonder how many of you alumni actually did that?

venice high

Bless it.  I would have failed out of high school for sure.

Before long I forgot all about how crappy I felt and all the food I ate the night before and I just feel into the motion of my stride and because the weather has been so rainy, the trail was nearly deserted.  That means that instead of the usual humming, I sang.  Out loud.

cant sing

Y’all it aint pretty!

I was totally in my own world and having the time of my life and that’s probably why I was completely startled when the vagrant guy driving the three wheeled, junk filled bike came rollin’ up on me.  I swear to Jesus had I not been about to shit my pants I would’ve taken a picture.  He was covered in tattoos and he rolled up real close to me and said, ‘Damn girl, you are fast, I’ve been trying to catch you for the last 10 minutes.’

scary

I wasn’t running fast at all but you can bet your sweet ass I was after that.  In fact, you have no idea how fast you can run until a homeless guy in a garbage bike rolls up behind you sporting a ‘not guilty’ tattoo on his lower back.  You can fly sis!  And I did.

When I got back to the house I told MacGyver about it first thing and he asked if I had my pepper spray and I said yes, and then he said, ‘what kind of idiot gets a tattoo that says not guilty?’

Really

He obviously thinks I’m completely capable of protecting myself. #fooled

Seriously though, I’m telling you this story because while I didn’t feel as threatened as I have in some other situations, I did learn a valuable lesson.  I’m definitely going to be more careful about getting so lost in my thoughts when I’m out there by myself.  It could have gone horribly bad if that guy had been dangerous because I was so into my own world that I had no idea he was there until he was on my heels.

So, be aware when you’re out there.  I’ve been running a long time and even I do things every once in a while that I later realize were pretty stupid.  (Singing doesn’t count.)

worst tattoo

Can you imagine? Holy hell, that’s permanent.

And for God’s sake if you’re going to get a tattoo, take your mother with you.  She will be honest.

Have you ever been so lost in thought and then gotten the scare of your life while out running?

Friday five or six, who cares, it’s donut day!

I’ve decided to take the day off from running today.  Instead MacGyver and I woke up early and went to a garage sale.  They advertised tons of fiestaware which I was super excited about but we ended up buying beach chairs and a beach umbrella instead.

yard sale

I was perfectly content just going to the one sale but MacGyver saw a sign for another one and so I was like, sure fine let’s go to it too, and we did.

lol garage sale

We bought a few more things, (but not sex toys) and then headed home and there was still time to go running, but I opted out because it’s National Donut Day!

DONUTS FOR ALL

PRIORITIES, Donut disturb me!

Krispy Kreme donuts is giving away donuts for free, no purchase required!  Dunkin Donuts is giving away a donut with the purchase of a beverage.  I can’t eat the donuts myself, but I will drink the coffee and MacGyver can have the donuts.  You should go get some though because, free!

Yesterday afternoon, after a 10 hour workday, my brain was fried and I needed some sort of a distraction.  I decided to watch a good documentary on Netflix and you can thank me later because I have a really good running documentary to recommend to you.

Finding Traction

Check out Finding Traction, it’s a film about Nikki Kimball, an ultra marathoner who’s quest is to beat the men’s record on the Long Trail and to raise money for Girl’s on the Run.  I really liked it.

If you aren’t familiar with Nikki Kimball, look her up.  She’s a phenomenal ultra runner who’s battled depression and used running to overcome it.  Her story is inspiring.

Do y’all remember Harriet Carter, the 94 year old running granny I told you about a few years ago?

Harriet Carter

Well, she’s back at it and still going strong!

Yesterday I was looking over emails and a feed from Runner’s World came in and I saw this story about a Ragnar Race

Ragnar Runnerand how this one runner was attacked during her night run!  She managed to get away because she was able to scream out for help and fortunately it was 9:30 at night and someone was up and outside and heard her but how scary.  You can read the article here.

Last night MacGyver and were watching Netflix when he put on this movie that bored the hell out of me until it didn’t because it won my entire week.  This has got to be the best gif ever. Brad Pitt running in War Machine is delicious!  As the most awkward runner on the planet, from the bottom of my heart, thank you Brad Pitt.

Bring on the gif

War Machine Run

You know what goes perfect with my awkard running gait?  My eye twitch.  Because yes, I still have an eye twitch in my left eye.  If it wasn’t caused by my thyroid medication, or my topirimate, what the hell is causing it?  Why is still twitching?  What is the twitch?  Covfefe!

Mystery solved!

Happy Friday!  Get out there and get your donuts!  And then go run.  Go!

What are your plans for the weekend?

Seven Islands Birding Park, my Barkley Marathons practice run ;)

What’s happenin’ honeys?  Good things I hope.  Not much over here right now.  I’m just catching up on some work.  This morning MacGyver and I took a little break and may or may not have went to a few estate sales.  I’ll never tell.  Never mind those vintage pyrex to go baking dishes on the counter, I’ve had those things for years….

where did those come from

Now since I don’t want to leave you guys hanging I thought I would share with you little parts of my Tennessee trip over the next week or so and today I’m going to share with you the day I ran in the Seven Islands Birding Park.

In pictures of course because that’s how we roll on Fridays, lazy.

Deer

When I first started to run, two deer ran in front of me and then stopped. I told them to go on but one of them wouldn’t. I slowly walked up to him and stuck my hand out. At first he sniffed and then he licked it! That will NEVER happen again in a million years!

birding park

I have the worst sense of direction and I got a little lost a few times and had to double back because I wanted to take the longer trail by the river. It is very remote and hilly and I loved it.

Barn

You enter at a barn and my sister told me the turn around point was at the second barn so I was glad when I finally came upon this one.  I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to run through this one too but I didn’t.  I ran around it.

steep hill

And up this hill which was steep.  The picture doesn’t really do it justice because this hill is super steep.

trail head

There is a viewing area at the trail head and you can see the river below.

River View

This is a better view of the River.  Okay, maybe not that better but were not finished yet.

Trail

It’s a little remote in spots but I didn’t mind.  It’s also muddy and there are some brambles.  Barkley Marathon practice y’all!

seven islands birding park

Besides, with views like this at the top how could you really be mad?

park

I loved this little spot. I am definitely coming back. I’m jealous this place isn’t right in my backyard.  It’s times like this I really do miss Tennessee….

If you happen to hang your hat in Kodak, Tennessee even if for a minute, I highly recommend this place.  It might even be good practice for the Barkley Marathons since only one person even finished this year and he was from the area.  🙂

What’s your absolute favorite trail?
