Thursday Things – Team Work

Y’all it’s so cold. I know you have no sympathy for me, especially if you live anywhere north of Georgia but dang, I am freezing my tookus off!

running weather
I went for an 8 mile run this morning and with the wind chill factor it was 41 degrees. Forty. One! We will probably only reach 49 as the high today, and tonight will be 33. If it continues on this path, I may have to consider moving south, but since Miami’s high today is only around 60, Cuba is in the running for my new homeland.

After I got home from my run this morning, I went through the garage and onto the back lanai, just as I normally do. Typically I leave my shoes and my visor out there and the dogs are always out there to greet me. This morning, they were not there.

At first I was a little worried but then I called them and after a few minutes, they came out. Boomer seemed a little skittish and Hank was avoiding me. I should have known something was wrong. I should’ve known.

As soon as I opened the back door and looked into the den I could see it. A ridiculously long trail of garbage that began in the kitchen and went through the dining room, living room and ended in the den.

dogs make mess

Just picture this… only with a lab and a dachshund and way more garbage.

And of course they waited until I left this morning, you know, right after I emptied the coffee grounds and the dirt from the vacuum cleaner into the trash.

There it was, all over the floor and in all the main rooms of my house, the entire contents of my very large, and now empty trash can. God bless the little baby Jesus because it was all I could do to keep from smacking the crap out of both of those dogs. They’re hellions!

After I cleaned all the floors I was finally able to sit down and go through emails. I wish I had done so sooner because the email that I’m going to share with you is only valid for 24 hours.

Pro Compression socks
Click on this link for Pro Compression Socks and get them for $14.95. I’m serious, $14.95!

That is one hell of a deal. ***UPDATE – Sorry guys, the deal is over, they are now back to $24.95. I hope you were able to get some when they were $14.95.

And now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to go research weather patterns, because a friend just left me a message telling me the temperature in Cuba today is only 64! God Bless it.

What is the temperature where you are today?

Running shoes, clothing and gear, all at a discount!

Let’s be real for a minute, okay? Unless you happen to be a brand ambassador and receive a ton of free products, happen to be a billionaire or are married to one, you probably don’t run out and buy every single new gadget, pair of running shoes, or pair of compression socks that hit the market. Do You?

I don’t.

Expensive running shoes

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be the first to admit, I’ve got over 20 pairs of Pro Compression socks, I own a Garmin 405 AND a 620 and there are over 50 pairs of running shoes in my closet of which 10 pairs are back-ups. That being said, other than a single pair of running shoes, I don’t really need any of those things. Running doesn’t really need to cost a lot of money and while it’s true that some of us, me included, want the latest and greatest things on the market, there is a way to get great stuff at a discount.

In case you don’t know me or you’re new here, let me just fill you in, I’m old and I’m cheap. That’s really all you need to know but what that equates to is that I need products that work for me and keep me healthy and I don’t want to shell out a ridiculous amount of money for them. I also don’t scrimp on medical care. Damn it if your injured, don’t borrow a knee brace, see a good doctor! For clothing, watches, apps, socks, hydration and everything in between, use what works for you, and that doesn’t have to be a top brand or the most expensive.

mom and dog, same shoes

Don’t get me wrong, there are areas where you need to be picky, like shoes. I would never recommend just purchasing any old pair of running shoes. I recommend you go to a running store and get fitted for a pair of running shoes that are right for you. Not only can the running store help you find the right shoes but most of them allow you to return them, even after several miles, if they don’t work for you. Of course once you find out what shoes work for you, you can always get additional pairs at a lower price.

How? Well, first, the shoe company is going to come out with another model and you don’t have to upgrade. I wear Brooks PureFlow 2’s and they work perfectly for me so I see no reason to upgrade to the 3’s just yet. Add to that the fact that the new model may have changed and may not work for me and I definitely do not want to upgrade yet. But the best part about wearing the 2’s is that once the 3’s come out, the 2’s go on sale! I found additional pairs at 6pm.com for around 60 bucks and about two months ago, I found them at dsw.com for 40 bucks, hence the 10 back-up pairs! I’ve got enough shoes to last me for the next year at least and I see no reason to switch shoes when clearly the ones I’m wearing are working for me.

I don’t need to upgrade, these shoes are working fine!

For clothing, I am lucky enough to live in Florida which means I don’t really need a lot of cold weather running clothes and the most important thing I look for when I purchase anything is: Will it keep me cool and wick the sweat away? You don’t have to spend a fortune on clothing. I shop at Dicks when I have coupons or they have really good sales but I also shop at Marshall’s and I find all kinds of stuff there. My main go to source for running clothes however, is 6pm.com. They have tons of stuff and free shipping and the prices are unbeatable. And here’s a tip for you, if you find a pair of shorts or a shirt that you like at Marshall’s, often times, they only have one or it’s only available in one color so you can go to 6pm.com and look for the same item and usually find it for around the same price but in multiple colors and sizes. I bought a new balance tank at Marhsall’s that I am in love with but they only had it in mint green, 6pm.com had it in 5 additional colors and I got them for under 10 bucks each which was less than I paid at Marshall’s.

I also love the pureproject shorts from Brooks but I refuse to pay 75 bucks for shorts. I got mine from Dicks for $55.99 and with a coupon I found on-line for $10 off of $50, I got them for $45.99 plus tax. Not bad. I also bought two more pairs from 6pm.com for $52.99. I also buy my Nike Tempo and Hero Mesh shorts from 6pm.com and they are always under 15 bucks.

Marshall’s and 6pm.com are also great sources for hydration belts and vests. I’ve purchased nathan hydration belts at both places at huge discounts as well as at Amazon. I have a pretty expensive hydration vest that used to be MacGyver’s but it isn’t my favorite thing to carry and it’s bulky. My favorite hydration vest is and off brand I purchased at Aldi for under 15 bucks! Aldi is also another good source although they don’t always carry the things you need. Before I got my Garmin 620, I got a heart rate monitor from Aldi for 30 bucks and it still works great.

It’s no secret that I love Pro Compression socks and I have a ton of them but I always buy them when they have 40% off sales. That way I can get two pairs for only slightly more than the cost of one. I also like the fact that they’re well made and will last a very long time. You can also google Pro Compression sock sale and I can almost guarantee you that someone will have a discount code for you.

So, from time to time, I like to post links when I find good products on sale for a great price. I love a bargain and I think most other people do too and I like to share. Next week, I’m going to tell you how to save money on race registrations and how to choose the best ones.

Do you like hearing about discounts on running gear?

Do you think I should dedicate a page for coupons and discounts that I find on running gear?

Do you have any suggestions to share on where to get running gear at a discount?

Just a quarter mile from Cuba…

Good Morning and Happy Monday!

We’re still in Venice. I’m not sure when we’re leaving but since MacGyver’s business is slower in the Summer months, he can take some time off; which makes me very happy. I can work from anywhere, or not work from anywhere, depends on your perspective, I suppose, the point is, I’m mobile. Anyway we’re still in Venice!

When I last updated I was about to head out on the Legacy Trail for a Saturday run. I ran 7 miles that morning and on Sunday I ran 8. I’m not pushing myself too hard right now but both days were pretty nice. Hot, but nice. This is the part of the trail that runs over the water by my house. It’s just torture to have to run over it and look at the manatee’s in the morning….

Legacy Trail Bridge

Not a bad view to run over, huh?

On Saturday I opted not to go out on the boat because I was afraid I might get seasick if MacGyver went offshore. Instead I stayed home and did a little yard work and then I did a helluva lot of little shopping. Of course by Sunday, I was itching for some fishing, ha, so I decided to take my chances and go for it.

Our friend Danny got into town from California on Saturday so we invited him along as well.
DannyDanny’s parents used to be our neighbor’s down here and he’s become a part of our family, so we were pretty excited to see him. It doesn’t hurt that he loves to fish almost as much as MacGyver does so he gives me a much-needed break by going out on the boat with MacGyver when I don’t want to. But on Sunday, I decided to go too.

In PRO Compression of course. What else would you wear out on the boat?

We started off inshore and let the dogs swim. They had a pretty good time but we were having no luck with the fishing so we decided to head offshore.

We went out pretty far, so far in fact, that you couldn’t really see the shore. I believe we were about a quarter of a mile from Cuba, and it was pretty rough out there, but I didn’t get seasick. Off in the distance I could make out a faint shoreline and I was looking forward to kissing the sand in Cuba and having a drink, or 4, at one of the oceanfront bars, and possibly a Cuban cigar. You only live once, right? I was having visions of a Hemingway type of adventure, this was going to be fun. An epic adventure was awaiting me.

Mommy, where’s the shore? I can’t see land. All I see are schools of Tuna!

Then MacGyver pointed out that we were actually only 2 miles from shore and the shoreline I was looking at was actually Venice Beach which we had left just 25 minutes earlier, but personally, I prefer my version. It sounds way cooler.

I did manage to catch a red grouper, unfortunately he wasn’t a keeper….

We were out on the water until 6pm so by the time we got home we were all pretty fried. MacGyver grilled some fish, we ate dinner and then proceeded to fall asleep before 8pm. Yeah, we party. The only thing that would have made this weekend better is if the Kid could have come along…I will make that happen next time.

Now the sun is coming up and a new week has begun. Time for me to go for a run and get this day started off, the right way. 🙂

Have you ever been to Cuba?
