Paddleboarding with Manatees and lots of running!

Hey, hey, hey! How goes it? I sure hope you had a fantastic weekend and a wonderful Memorial Day. We were in Venice with good friends and it was spectacular as always.

The Venice Inlet

It’s been a while since my last post and so I have lots to catch you up on and I’m just gonna dive right in cause that’s how we play around here.

First, great news for all you Brooks Pureflow 2’s lover’s, DSW has them on sale right now for 39.99! I know, I almost died when I saw that. They have two colors available ( both of which I have and love) so I broke down and got some back-ups. They also have free shipping so two pairs of shoes for 80 bucks was pretty darn stellar in my book and I had to share.

Second thing. You really need to come to Venice, Florida and run with me. I love going down there and it is sort of convenient since we have a vacation house there but if you are anywhere near Venice please contact me and I will come and run with you.

running in venice

I’m not sure if it’s because we are on vacation or if it’s because it’s just fun to run someplace else, but I almost always love every single minute of the time I run when we’re in Venice, seriously. This weekend I ran Saturday, Sunday and Monday on the Legacy Trail. I ran a total of 18 miles and I can honestly say there was not one minute when I felt like I wanted to stop, not one. Now, if I could only duplicate that feeling when I get home that would be epic but I think I’m just sort of tired of the running trails around here and I need to mix it up a bit.

As I mentioned before we had a few friends down with us this weekend and my friend Diane loves to paddleboard as much, if not more, than I do. She and I went out on the paddleboards both Sunday and Monday and guess what? We saw a manatee on BOTH DAYS! Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures of the manatees because I’ve learned that cell phones are not a good thing to take on paddleboards, just trust me on that, but the absolute best way to see a manatee is while you paddleboard beside them. They swim right beside you.

Venice Florida On Sunday, a baby manatee swam right up to us and alongside us and on Monday we actually paddled into a cove and there was a very large manatee just playing in the water. She actually swam around with us for quite a while and I hated that we had to paddle back to the boat because I didn’t want to leave her. Of course it wasn’t so bad on the boat either because the dolphins were also very playful over the weekend and swam right up to the boat.

We didn’t get a chance to go to yoga because the guys were really antsy to go fishing every morning and we really wanted to paddleboard but yoga on the beach is on the list for next time. We did however, go to the drum circle because there are some things that just can’t be missed….

Lastly, remember how I said that I had a lot of stomach issues and I was going to get some testing done to find out what was going on? Well, the long and short of it is…

I’m allergic to shellfish, some other types of fish, wheat and soy. I am also sensitive to chocolate and dairy including milk, eggs and ice cream, (among other things) and my life is pretty much over…kidding!

This has presented a challenge for us because MacGyver and the kid still eat some of these things and I’m okay with that, I just have to learn how to make alternative versions that won’t affect me negatively. I think one of the worst parts about developing food allergies later in life is that you aren’t accustomed to asking about ingredients and such and there is definitely a learning curve. So, if any of you have suggestions, I’d love to hear from you!

Well, that’s it. I’m taking the day off from running today so I can get caught up on some work so I better get going. I hope you all have a fabulous Tuesday!

Do you like to paddleboard?

Have you ever don’t yoga on the beach?

Have you ever tried yoga on your paddleboard?

The mini vacay is over.

I’m baaaaaaaaaaaack. The mini vacay is over. *sigh That’s okay though because we’re going back in about 10 days! Nice. I’m spoiled, I know.

I did manage to get a few runs in while on vacation. Saturday I ran 9 miles on the Legacy Trail and Sunday, I ran 5 miles on the Venetian Parkway Trail. I would have run more but well, we had some very important things to do:

boating in Venice

You know they’re totally saying, ‘Mom, can we jump in yet?’ because 5 seconds after I said, do you wanna go swimming, they were already across the Bay. Gotta love em.

I was really looking forward to riding my paddleboard but every time I turned around MacGyver was jackin it:

My husband is a paddleboard thief, really. Guard yours if he is in the vicinity.

We went to dinner Saturday night. For some reason I was craving Applebee’s so that’s where we went.

Dinner at Applebee's

Somebody needs a hair salon stat! Got any ideas? I’m clueless when it comes to my hair.

Our waiter reminded me of this guy:

Sunday, it was back to the boat. Hank absolutely loves to fish with daddy:

He’s trying to score some bait fish and I believe he scored around 3 before the day was over.

Boomer just watches me fish until I catch one and then he tries to eat it off the line:

The kid even made an appearance this weekend. He was in Bradenton for a movie on Saturday so he went to Bentley’s in Nokomis afterward and brought me and MacGyver some of the best calories ever! We love Bentley’s and we go there way more than we should but if you are ever in the Venice, Florida area, more specifically, Nokomis, check them out. You will think you have died and gone to ice cream heaven.

We left a little early on Sunday because Hank wasn’t feeling too well. (Probably from all the bait fish he stole.)

I got up this morning and ran a quick 3.1 on the treadmill. I ran the first mile in 8.5 minutes but I couldn’t hold that pace for the next 2.1 so I slowed it down and finished in 28:09. I either take Mondays off or I do a short run on Monday and Tuesday. Since it’s been so hot, I’m running shorter distances but doing so more often. It works for me but I also play it safe and if I feel I need to rest, I do.

So, that was my quick recap of the weekend, what did you do this weekend?

Do you take mini vacay’s? How often?

When it’s too hot to run, I run to the water…

Long time no post…sigh. How is everyone? I’m good, hot, but good. Sadly, I haven’t run more than 5.5 miles in any one day since last week. I didn’t even get a long run in this weekend. I am not beating myself up over it though…It is frustrating all the same because I am still training for this:

26.2 Tervis Tumbler

I love my Tervis Tumbler’s. The factory is located about a half mile from my other house in Venice and I love going in there. The good thing about Tervis is that their Tumblers are guaranteed, for life! So if they break or crack or get damaged in any way, you just return them and pick out a new one. No questions asked. Thats hella cool. (They also make a 13.1 tumbler for those of you who are wondering…I have one of those two, of course).

Anyway, back to the heat. How hot is it you ask? Well, here is the weather forecast for today:

hot temperatures

Did you see the ‘feels like 103’? Well, it does. I’ve been running on my lanai which is where my treadmill is and if I could lug that industrial bear into my house I probably would because my lanai gets hot. How hot? This hot:

Over 100 degrees

Yes, that’s 102.2 outside, nice right?

I would love to run outside on the trail but I would have to leave the house before or very near dawn and I had a scary situation on the trail near my house last year so I don’t run in the early morning hours outside anymore and it’s too hot after 7:30, so I play it safe, for real! Hello treadmill. I also look for other ways to work out in the summer…..

Tonight we are headed to the house in Venice and I’ll get to run outside at least tomorrow morning, yay! The trail is right behind our house and safe and I can run very early in the morning hours without worry. We’re also going to take out our new boat which we bought in February and have only taken out twice so I’m pretty excited. I may even go skiing or wakeboarding. Add to that the fact that my paddleboard is sitting in the dock house just waiting for me and I can barely contain myself. Who knows, maybe we’ll even get a little swell and I can go surfing!

So what exactly is the moral of this random post. I think it’s this. Even though it’s hot outside and there are obstacles preventing me from running as much as I’d like, there are still many other forms of exercise that I can do, from paddleboarding to skiing and even swimming that will also help me build my strength and endurance.

So, don’t let the hot weather kick the motivation out of you. Turn it around and make it work for you. Go to the water and get in a workout. And if you aren’t near the water, there are plenty of rec centers and community pools out there if you search for them…whatever type of workout you choose, have fun!

What types of workouts do you do when it’s just too hot to run?
