My motiv ring is no longer motivating

I expect my technology to go wonky over time but let’s get real, by over time, I mean a long time, like at least a year or longer.  I love Garmin and I’ve owned 3 Garmin watches, two of which I still have.  I use them a lot so when after a year or a year and a half when they don’t stay charged as long or they occasionally don’t track a run, I get it.

I can say the same about fitbits.  I owned two fitbit HR’s and I loved them.  I wore them every day and they tracked my workouts fine but after a year or so the bands became torn and they would occasionally stop tracking and lose battery life quickly.  Both Garmin and fitbit are great with warranties and returns so I never had a problem.

Since October of last year I’ve been using the Motiv ring.  At 199 dollars I expected big things.  Overall I’ve been fairly happy with the ring and the company has continued to improve the app to include additional features and enhancements.  The only problem I had up until recently was the battery life.  My ring stopped holding a charge for longer than a day after only 5 months.

The great thing that I can say about Motiv is they handle their customer service issues and they did send me another ring about a week or so after I sent mine back.  The problem is, it still doesn’t hold a charge.  I mean, it holds a charge for around 2 days now but that’s all.  I was prepared to live with that until recently when it didn’t track my run and then once more it happened and I realized that it only happened when I didn’t sync it before going out to run.

Lastly, I have to twist it to sync it and lately it takes a really long time before it syncs and I find that extremely annoying.  I realize I may just have a defective ring and so I’ve contacted support again.  I’m mentioning it here because I believe in being 100% honest in my reviews.  I searched online to see if anyone else was having similar issues and I really didn’t find much so I’m hoping it’s just me but I am having issues.

And that brings me to another point.  I miss the fitbit community.  I also love the Garmin connect community but it’s nice to have that connection with other fitbit users.  I was so disappointed when my sister in law sent me a request to join her fitbit community after she got a new fitbit for Christmas and then I realized, I wasn’t using mine anymore.  I also miss having the time on my wrist at all times and not having to look at my phone.

I also have an apple watch that the kid gifted me last year when he got a new one and I do like it too but it’s a bit heavy to run with and I’m constantly worried that it will get damaged.  Apple watches are hella expensive so I usually only wear it for the ability to use it instead of my phone in certain situations.  And because it’s cool.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not giving up completely on the Motiv ring but I am thinking of entertaining a new device.  It’s one thing to have a single issue with something but repeated issues or multiple ones are not okay.  And I really don’t like having to twist to sync it.  I was okay with it in the beginning but sometimes it takes a while to connect and I’m super impatient so that’s probably just my issue.

I have contacted the Motiv support department again and we’ll see what they have to say but since I haven’t seen anything about it online, I’m curious if anyone else has had any issues or if it’s just me.

What do use as a fitness tracker?

How long have you been using it?

Have you tried others?

Are you happy with what you’re using currently?

Hiking Hocking Hills

One of the places the kid often raves about it Hocking Hills.  He’s been there quite a few times since moving to Columbus and he always has a great time.  With more than 10,000 acres of state parks there are a ton of things to see.

I was super excited when he took the day off of work on Friday and we headed there.

Hocking Hills

I didn’t bring trail shoes with me so I just wore a pair of regular running shoes.  It wasn’t too cold that day so a sweatshirt was all I needed.  Luckily I had brought my Columbia backpack on the plane with me and also, luckily, the kid offered to carry it after about 15 minutes.  Bonus!

Hocking Hills State Park has five separate sections: Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls, Ash Cave, Cantwell Cliffs, and Rock House.  The only part we didn’t visit is Whispering Caves which is located on the Hemlock Bridge Trail and we didn’t have the time to do that one.

Old Mans Cave Old Man’s Cave is named for a hermit, Richard Rowe, who used to live there.  His family moved to the Ohio River Valley around 1796 from the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee.  Richard and his two hound dogs traveled through Ohio along the Scioto River in search of game. On one side trip up Salt Creek, he found the Hocking Region and he lived out his life in the area.  He is buried beneath the ledge of the main recess cave.

We hiked through all of the trails in just over five hours.  In all I believe we walked a little over 12 miles.

Some of the trails were a bit steep and the kid said that people die here almost every year.  We researched the park before heading out and were very careful while hiking and I cannot stress to you how important it is to pay attention.  We were extremely careful and still managed to trip a few times.

The trail markers were easy to follow and we never got lost which was a big fear of mine because typically I can’t find my way out of a hole.

It got fairly warm later in the day and I switched into a lighter jacket.  The kid went with short sleeves but I was not that brave.  It’s still Ohio and this Florida girl was cold.

The kid and I hiked around this entire lake, and I am here to tell you it was a lot longer than it said on the marker!  We didn’t mind but I don’t think anyone had hiked around it in a while.  There were some parts that were particularly muddy but we rallied.  The had stocked the lake with over a thousand rainbow trout the week before so there were some guys out fishing.  I was a little jealous when I saw two of them with a stringer of 9 fish!

It was so beautiful and I couldn’t help but take a thousand pictures.  Unfortunately, we had to take a break and delete some apps on my phone because I kept running out of space!

The water in Hocking Hills State Park is the most beautiful color you’ve ever seen due to the minerals in it.  You can’t swim at the waterfalls but they sure are spectacular to look at.

The kid said that he has never gotten his friends to hike the entire thing so he was pretty stoked that I wanted to.  I wish we could have seen the last part but it was already 5:30 in the afternoon and we had to drive back to Columbus.  I told the kid the next time I visit we have to go back so I can cross it off my list.

I know, I know, I’m killing you with all the pictures but I couldn’t help myself.  It was just such an incredible place.

Here’s one last one because I just can’t help myself.

There is a lot of walking up and down so if you’re not used to that it might be a bit hard to see all of the parks on your first visit.  The kid and I love to hike and we’re in pretty decent shape but we had some very sore calves the next day.

If you’re ever in Southeastern Ohio I highly recommend this place and in case you are a proud owner of a four legged friend, the park is pet friendly.  The next time I come, I’m bringing Hank.

When is the last time you went hiking and where did you go?

Did you know it was spring break?

Good Morning!

Spring Break

MacGyver and I are in Nokomis.  We drove down to Casey Key and the Venice Inlet yesterday to check out the red tide situation but we’re obviously oblivious and boring because we forgot it is spring break and holy cow, there were people everywhere!

The red tide didn’t seem too bad or at least it wasn’t affect our respiratory systems, as it can do, but supposedly it’s bad right now.  (Red tide is an algae bloom, in case you’re wondering and it can kill sea life and cause all kinds of problems.)

Over the weekend I went to the dollar tree with a friend and ran into another friend and we were all talking about Easter so I decided to buy some things at the dollar tree and make a wreath because I’m random like that.

dollar tree wreath

Not bad for six bucks and 30 minutes of time, huh?

This weekend was the first weekend that I did not hit double digit miles.  At first I was a bit upset with myself but then I realized that I haven’t taken a day off since last week and I ran 44 miles for the week so I really needn’t be so hard on myself.

I also looked at my ‘active’ miles via my motiv ring and they were also pretty high.

Active miles

I’d say that’s more than decent.  I’m happy with it.  I’m patting myself on the back and moving on.

On Saturday MacGyver went to an auction and I went to the grocery store but I got sidetracked by a moving sale.  I only purchased two items but they are sweet.

fiesta ware 1930's

Those are vintage Fiestaware water tumblers.  The original water tumblers from the late 30’s!  I got the red and ivory colors.

Here are the original six:

Apparently they are super hard to find so I think I’m pretty lucky to have even two.  They are in really good shape too.  Did I mention they are original?  From the late 30’s?  I did?  Sorry, can’t help myself, they’re awesome!

I also got a new casual dress last week in the mail and I wore it to the grocery store. I love it because it’s perfect to throw on after a workout if I have to go somewhere but it’s comfy and it was also only 15 bucks.  Apparently it’s a nice dress because the butcher came out and told me I looked amazing in it.

new amazing dress

Hank says his track suit is much more amazing than my stupid old dress.

Today MacGyver and I have to go spend some time in the permit office.  We applied for one several weeks ago to replace our windows and the windows are still sitting all over my house because apparently they want more paperwork.  Actually it’s the same paperwork, they just want us to copy it and put it with a new cover sheet and then resubmit it with the other paperwork.

The permit office baffles me.  Can someone find me a shirt that says this?

crazy

That way I could just wear it every time I have to go get a permit.

Have a fabulous Monday peeps!

What did you do this weekend?
