Tuesday Tangent, it’s about profit, not your health.

I’ve been fighting with my insurance company, Florida Blue, a division of Blue Cross Blue Shield for over a year because they refuse to pay for any medical testing other than an x-ray or blood work.  They’ve sent me numerous letters stating that they know that I have brain lesions and spinal issues but they don’t deem MRI’s or cat scans a necessary medical treatment despite the fact that ALL of my doctors have said I need to have those tests yearly.

Recently MacGyver has had some neck stiffness and nerve pain which alarmed his doctor and prompted hime to order some additional tests, immediately.  MacGyver is a man who does not go to the doctor and even refused an ambulance when his hand was filleted open after  a muzzle loader accident.  He has paid into the same insurance plan for over 5 years and gone to the doctor twice.  By my best estimates the insurance company has made a tidy little profit of about 40,000 dollars just from my husband and yet they denied any and all testing ordered.

It’s become such a trend around the medical center that I go to that as soon as I mention my insurance company inevitably someone will tell me that they don’t authorize any testing outside of doctors visits.  I also find it odd that they have a representative who actually has an office inside of the medical practice that I go to.  That’s just off putting to me.

I don’t know what other peoples experiences have been but I’ve often wondered and then I read about a doctor in Mississippi diagnosed with brain cancer who needs treatment but his insurance company will not pay.

doctor with brain cancer

Go ahead and take a guess at who his insurance company is….if you guessed Blue Cross Blue Shield, you nailed it.

Enough is enough people.  I am sick of this shit.  If you pay for a service you should receive that service.  Why is it okay that they continue to profit year after year while we have to fight for basic rights?  It’s not okay.  It’s not.

If you live in Florida and have ever had a problem with your health insurance, you can go here to file a complaint.  If you have problems with your health insurance and you live in any other state, I implore you to get in touch with the proper agency and file a report.

Florida Blue has an annual revenue of 8.9 billion dollars.  The CEO, Patrick Geraghty earned almost 7 million dollars in 2013 and who knows how much he earns now.  Not bad for a not for profit organization huh?

I wish I could give people advice when they’re struggling to get their insurance to pay but the only advice I have is do your best to stay healthy and try not to ever get sick.

Have you ever had trouble getting your health insurance to pay for testing or treatment?  What did you do about it?

WAIT, I’m completely unarmed, literally

Anybody else out there feel like this,

three day weekend hangoverI think I have a three day weekend hangover, is that a thing?

Yeah, the struggle is too real.  Anyhow, how was your weekend?  We had a pretty busy one.  In case I didn’t mention it and I probably didn’t, we were in Nokomis.  I actually ran a few miles and walked a heck of a lot because you know, the heat, it’s almost unbearable.  Speaking of which, on Saturday while I was struggled to run a few miles on the Legacy Trail, these two passed me.

Amish rollerbladers

They were so fast it was hard to get a good pic but that was two Amish women on roller blades and they whizzed right by me at a breakneck speed.  I don’t know exactly how fast that is, but if I went that fast on rollerblades, I’d break my neck so it was that fast.  And in case you couldn’t tell, they were in long dresses.  Seriously.

On Saturday MacGyver was working on a project for his parents so I hit up some garage sales and then went to pick up my mother in law so we could continue shopping.  You may not know this but I love to shop. I even went back out after dropping off my mother in law and doing a quick check on the dogs.  I think I finished up around 6:30 in the evening but only because I got hungry.  Hunger always wins.

The next day MacGyver went to work on his project again and I felt sort of guilty that he was working in the hot sun….okay actually, I spent too much money the day before so shopping was not an option.  I decided instead to mow the lawn, run the weed eater and then weed and mulch.

But first, I cleaned our fountain.  I think I did something wrong though because two days later it still looks like this,

fountain mishap

Too much soap perhaps?

I also planned on washing the dogs.   I managed to get Hank washed but I didn’t make it to Boomer because while I was pulling a limb out of our humongous dead oak tree, I inadvertently pulled down a wasp nest.

wasp stingswollen armOne of them got inside my glove and stung the crap out of me.  It swelled up so bad that tiny little blood vessels in my skin burst.  It looked a lot worse than it actually felt.  It just itched tremendously however I still managed to make it to dinner with my in laws and some friends because, I’m a trooper.

The next day MacGyver and I decided we needed to tackle the dead tree before heading to my in laws for the holiday and I mean, what better way to treat that sore arm, right?

MacGyver climbed up on a ladder and used a pole saw to cut the huge branches and then used the chain saw to cut them into manageable pieces.  My job was to stack all of the big logs and put all the smaller ones on a trailer to haul off later.  I raked up all the smaller pieces and we burned all of them in the firepit.

We were able to take out about a quarter of the tree before 1PM and it went really smooth until I dropped one of the logs and it landed on my right hand.  The left one was still swollen from the bee sting and looked like this,

Check out little Hank photo bombing like a champ

And then I managed to drop a log on the other arm,  so now the right arm looked like this,

bloody right arm

Again, it looks way worse than it actually was.  I still managed to make it to my in laws for afternoon and we had a beautiful day.  My arms just look a little like chopped meat but my lawn looks great and we’re almost completely prepared for hurricane season so there’s that.

We’re back in Clearwater and I’m working this morning and typing is sort of a challenge when both of your arms are hard to move.  Thankfully, I love a good challenge.  And hey, you don’t need arms to run, so I’m good.

arm punHow was your weekend?  What did you do for Memorial Day?  Ever been stung by a bee?

WTF Wednesday, I can’t leave my house, like, ever!

How is it Wednesday already?  Jeez Louise has this week flown by.  What’s been going on you ask?  Well a few things.

First, last week when I walked out my back door from the lanai, I was staring straight at this:

snakes

That’s not two snakes having sex as I originally thought. No, there were 5 of them just all intertwined like big ass snake weirdos.

Obviously I can never leave my house again.

Last week I told you about the 2nd washer that we got but that it had spring a leak and we had to move it out to the garage for repairs.  Well, it was actually in front of the garage and MacGyver fixed it, but just to make sure it didn’t leak again he wanted me to wash a few loads before moving it back to the laundry room.  That’s how we became known as ‘the house with the washer in the front of the garage smack dab in the middle of the driveway’ people.

The neighbors love us.

Those people

In order to prevent any fines from the city I convinced MacGyver that it was working just fine and he moved it back into the laundry room/ spare bathroom yesterday, and so far it’s working with no issues.  I know this because I’ve already used it 4 times.  Yes, I know, it’s a problem.

Last week I met with my immunologist regarding the antibody tests results.  He confirmed what I thought, that they were definitely low.  And actually, 7 out of 14 were basically non-existent, which means if I were to get sick with that type of illness my body would have a hard time fighting it.

So, the immunologist has ordered a pneumovax vaccine and then I have to go back in 4 and 6 weeks and have more antibody testing to see if my body develops antibodies.  Hopefully then I’ll know if the low IGG Subclasses are an issue or not.  In the meantime, the immunologist wanted to re-check my allergies.

allergy tests

Number 26 looks like a problem, what could it be??

allergies

Hmm, that’s a lot of numbers, I’m just glad they wash it all off.

I’m not sure if you can see it but the bright red spot on my back is for mold.  Apparently, I am allergic to mold, good to know.  Fortunately, I can avoid that easily.  Now, the big red spot on my arm, number 26, that’s going to be a hard one.  Because my worst nightmare was realized right there in the doctor’s office.  Guess who is allergic to her most favorite thing on the planet?

ME!

People, I’m extremely allergic to………………

DOGS!!!!!

oh god know

There’s always the option of allergy shots.  Because getting rid of the offending allergy is NOT an option.

Besides, my dogs protect me.  Just yesterday one of the snakes that live outside the lanai managed to find a way into the lanai and was just slithering around like he owned the place.  Little Hank saw it and grabbed it by the tail and shook it until it turned around and hissed at him.  I screamed and MacGyver came out and tried to get it out from behind the hurricane shutters with a grabber thingy.  It ran out the other side and then Hank chased it out the door.  It was all very scary but now I really can’t ever leave my house again.  EVER.

At least I have two washers to keep me busy and wtf, it’s Wednesday!  Something interesting is bound to happen, right?

When is the last time you saw a snake?

Do you have allergies?  To what?
