21 miles and fish, dead fish

I ran 21 miles last week.  That seems like such a low number to me since that would be a long run for me just a few years ago but these days it’s progress so there’s that.

It’s also balls hot here so anything over 3 miles a day and I’m going to need a saline drip.

Did I mention that I’m a widow.  Well, not technically a widow but a fishing widow.

Actually, I like to fish too.  A lot.  Unfortunately the red tide in the Venice area is horrible right now and based on my recent breathing issues, I’m not taking any chances.

red tide areas

In case you don’t know what red tide is, it’s the result of a harmful algae bloom, in most of the cases around our area, it’s an organism called Karenia Brevis or K. Brevis as it’s commonly known.  Not only is a Florida red tide harmful to the fish but it is also harmful to humans.

K. Brevia

And it even looks like a bug or a worm. GROSS

K. brevis, produces brevetoxins that can affect the central nervous system of fish and other vertebrates which causes these animals to die. The waves from the Gulf of Mexico can cause the K. brevis cells to break open and release these toxins into the air leading to respiratory irritation. For people with severe or chronic respiratory conditions red tide can cause serious illness. The red tide toxins can also accumulate in oysters and clams and that can lead to Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning if you consume contaminated shellfish.

Red tides have been recorded for decades in Florida, it’s not something new.  That being said there are a lot of people who believe that pollution has made the situation much worse and there are some people who believe that the water releases from Lake Okeechobee might cause or worsen the situation.  Scientist say that the later is not true.

I’m not a scientist and to be honest I don’t really know enough about it to make an informed decision but it seems to me that if you release algae infested waters into other bodies of water, the algae would follow as well which could create algae blooms.  Right?

This year the red tide has been going on for quite a while and it seems like it last longer every year.  I don’t remember having any red tide the first few years that we had a house in Venice. A few weeks ago MacGyver and I went down to the beach to collect some shells and there were dead fish all over the beach, the smell was horrible. It’s very sad to see all of the dead fish laying on the shore and floating in the water.

And it’s not just the respiratory problems that scare me, it’s also scary to think about what you might be consuming when you fish in the Gulf of Mexico and you eat what you catch, which we do.

This weekend I avoided the water the entire time.  When MacGyver asked if I wanted to go, I said no and adopted this new attitude.

my new attitude

Maybe this red tide will die off soon and we can get back to business, the business of competing for the most fish caught. Because, obviously I will win.

What do you know about red tide?

Have you ever gotten sick breathing the air during red tide?

WTF Wednesday, droppin panties like a smurf.

Y’all know I love my planks.  I just don’t do them as often as I’d like to or as often as I should.  So yesterday I was looking for a little motivation and hoping to find a quick workout or a youtube video to help get me moving but I found something even better.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

That, my friends, is Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  The one and only Justice Ginsburg.  I am so completely impressed by the Notorious RBG.

But if you think her workouts are easy, check out this video, you might be surprised.

That shirt.  I’m in awe.  Love her.  Girls, this woman should be a role model, not a Kardashian or a Jenner but this woman.

Yesterday I was reading the top news stories on my feed and came across this photo:

Funeral pose

Sadly, that’s a funeral viewing and that young man was shot to death while out walking his new dog by someone who just wanted to steal his phone.  Such a tragedy.

What I was shocked about was the funeral viewing.  Apparently this is a new thing and it’s wildly popular.  The family chose to ‘pose’ the boy with his favorite things.  The article showed images of other viewings as well, like this woman who apparently loved her scotch, beer and Salem’s.

Dead woman

I tend to think ahead and so my first thought was, if a person was embalmed that way, how the hell are they going to be able to fit them in a casket later?  Seriously.  It seems like that would present a major problem.  But my second thought was, if I was going to have that type of funeral I’d want to be in my running clothes crossing a finish line.  Not just any finish line but let’s go all out and make it the Boston Marathon finish line and while we’re at it, pose me so I’m breaking the tape and winning the damn thing.  Yeah, that’ll work.  I think I just planned out my funeral.

Over the weekend I was out shopping and I was wearing a Nike running skort.  It has strings on the side so that you can shorten it a bit if you want, and for some reason the string on the right side was irritating me all day.  My last stop was a Goodwill store in Osprey which is known for having a lot of good designer clothes.

As I held a few items in my hand the string on my skort was itching badly so I kind of lifted my leg and rubbed my elbow against it and that’s when my freshly laundered panties fell out onto the floor.

Oh dear God

And because I have the luck of the Gods there was an employee walking by at that exact moment and she said ‘oh, did you want to try these on to’  just as she was reaching down to pick up the panties.

And I don’t know what I was thinking because I’m pretty sure she saw the panties fall from my general area but for some reason I blurted out, ‘I don’t know where those came from’.  That was also the moment she realized they were panties and quickly threw them back on the floor.

I put back the clothing in my arms and made a beeline for the front door.  I’m pretty sure she either thinks I was trying to steal panties from the Goodwill or that I’m some sort of pervert.   I will now be carefully separating the laundry before I wash my clothes.  And I probably won’t be shopping at that Goodwill ever again.

You know how we get stuck in a routine with products, like makeup and nail polish?  I mean, am I the only person who tends to wear the same things over and over?  This week I decided enough was enough and I changed it up.  I went to the nail salon and instead of my french mani or my usual pink, I went with a pop of color.

Only the summer blue that I chose isn’t really the fun color I thought it would be.  Instead my hands look like they belong to a smurf.

nail color

WTF it’s Wednesday and I’m just gonna roll with it.

Ever washed your clothes and then realized your panties were stuck in your jeans or yoga pants or shorts?  Apparently it runs in my family…

There’s no place like home, which in this case is my head.

I swear I’m in a good mood today but in case you have any doubts after reading my tangents just remember I said that.  Okay?

not in a bad mood

The Motiv ring, which I really do still love, still won’t hold a charge for longer than a few days.  I started to think that maybe it’s because I tend to be really active throughout the day and it’s constantly working, or maybe it’s just me and I’m doing something wrong.  But then when I was feeling bad last week and my activity level was much lower, it still didn’t hold a charge for longer than 2 days.

It’s the third one so I just feel like it’s something they really need to work on.  Other than that, I do love the ring.  I love that I can take a shower with it and I love that it tracks all of my activities, even swimming.  I hope that they are able to do something about the battery life though because that’s a pain.

If you remember the kid bought me the fitbit Versa for Mother’s day.  I love it.  It’s been a staple on my wrist ever since and it holds a charge for a good  or 5 days which is nice.  It also shows me the time and text messages which is really important to me. I’ve actually been wearing both the motiv ring and the fitbit Versa, well, until yesterday.

I’ve been running this week and I was pretty excited yesterday to have my 10,000 steps in before 8AM and I was really curious how many steps I had a few hours later.  I looked down at the watch and then hit the button on the left side.  Blank.

I tried everything, blank.  After researching it online and trying all the resets, I called fitbit.  They had me do all of the things I spent the previous hour already doing.  Still blank.  I told the lady from fitbit that I had read about this online that this seems to be a common problem, so she had me spend another 30 minutes resetting just to make sure.  Still freaking blank.

So today I’m sending the Versa back and they are going to send me a new one.

Except reliable trackers, apparently.

This morning was the day we chose to release Squeakers the Mohawk, the bluejay I rescued.  We brought his cage outside in front of the lanai and carefully opened the door.  He flew all the way around the yard and then came back by us and landed squarely on my head.

So we took him out further, to the oak tree by the water.  He flew up to the tree, perched on a low branch and then took off and flew all around the tree.  And then right back to the top of my head.

After repeating this process 11 times it finally occurred to us that Squeakers the Mohawk is perfectly happy right where he is.  He’s been on the lanai all morning long with the door wide open but so far, he hasn’t ventured outside.  I guess we’ll try again tomorrow.

I wish I had something I could track him with for the day that he actually does fly away but I guess I should find one that works for me first.

What fitness tracker or trackers do you use?

What do you love and or hate about your fitness tracker?
