Jelly Eye Benedryl Haze Hangover

I’m sitting here watching My Big Fat Fabulous Life and trying to finish up some work but I am so easily distracted that I sometimes find it hard to focus and so I just give in.    Isn’t this the week to do that sort of thing anyway?  Does anyone really get anything accomplished between Christmas and New Years?  I mean, besides gaining 3 pounds because that, well, I nailed that.

average holiday weight gain

Yep, that’s about right….

We came home last night and I did manage to get up and run this morning which was good because yesterday morning I woke up with a jelly eye and I spent the entire day ingesting Benadryl’s and trying like hell to figure out what it was that I ate that I had an allergic reaction to.

Fortunately, this is about as bad as my eye got.

Call me Jelly Eye!

It’s much better today.  The swelling and jelly have all disappeared and that’s why I was able to run this morning, albeit in a bit of a fuzzy haze.   I’ve got a slight migraine I’m trying to fight off too but considering how great I’ve felt the past several weeks I refuse to complain about it at all.  I’m almost positive that I was gluttened or poisoned, by accident of course, I hope.  I’ll just have to be more careful next time, that’s all.

It is getting easier learning what I can and can’t eat.  Learning what upsets my stomach, and what causes more of an allergic response.  I still keep diaries.  It seems monotonous.  Sometimes it is.  It’s necessary.  Oddly, I don’t mind.

I still find it hard to believe that George Michael, Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds are no longer with us.  Is anyone else hesitant to get on the computer in the morning or go on facebook or turn on the TV?

I do.  It’s a good thing I have a ton of things to keep me busy like, walking the dogs.  They don’t let me forget either.  They wait for me every morning while I take my shower.  When I stepped out this morning, I saw them laying together so sweetly like this….

Brotherly love

They look so sweet don’t they?  It looks just like Hank is saying ‘My brother is the best brother in the whole wide world, he’s better than any blanket or bed ever and I just love to snuggle with him.’

What Hank really thinks:  ‘Move over fatso, you’re hoggin up the rug and you know I’m a Prince and I can’t touch my ass to a hard cold floor.’

And Boomer is thinking, ‘Oh, please, don’t irritate me, I’ll fake a cute stretch and a yawn and drop kick you clear across this room.’

Aren’t they adorable?

Way more entertaining than the internet any day.

Do you work the week between Christmas and New Year and do you get anything done?

The best present ever, and I got it!

Happy December 27th or as we like to call it, National Fruitcake Day!

You Fruitcake

Have yourself some fruitcake and live a little why don’t ya…or not.

You could just have an orange.  I happen to know they’re in season right now.  I know this because our Nokomis house is about 3 blocks away from Nokomis Groves and I’ve already been there three times.  I’ve also been to the orange tree at the vacant house at the end of the street and all the other rogue orange trees I can find because I cannot get enough of the sweet citrus goodness.

I could live on Oranges alone. No really, I could

So, in case you’re wondering, we’re still in Nokomis.  Yeah, I know, we WERE supposed to be back on Sunday night but then Sunday night came and MacGyver decided to sleep on it and then Monday morning came and I was getting ready to go out for a run and MacGyver was all like, ‘hey since I got the dates all mixed up and my sister is actually coming tonite’ maybe we should just stay down here for a few more days.’  And I was like, ‘yeah, since YOU got the date mixed up jackass, then yeah, we should.’  So, we’re still here.  I don’t care, I can work from anywhere.  Of course MacGyver is out fishing.

i aint mad

Go ahead and go fishin honey, I aint mad.

But enough about that, let’s get to the fun stuff and do some recapping and such.

This year was going to be a tough one for me because even though the kid is older, Christmas day is also his birthday and with him being in Columbus I knew it was going to be hard not having him here.  Thankfully, we have facetime and we were able to talk to each other quite a bit so it wasn’t so bad.

My Mother and Father in law are at their home in Englewood for the Winter and Spring so we were able to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with them which was wonderful.  I may have showered everyone with too many presents but I couldn’t help myself.

Everyone was also kind enough to indulge me and let me make a birthday cake for kid even though kid isn’t here.

Happy Birthday Kid. We had a Gluten Free cake so you’re probably glad you missed it 😉

As for me, I only had to things on my list this year.

(It’s true, close your mouth before a fly gets in.)

The only things I wanted this year were a new pair of running shoes and I wanted to hit the double digits again.  As in miles.  I wanted a double digit long run before the end of the year.

MacGyver came through with the first thing and I already knew about them because they were sitting on our kitchen table for about a week before we came down to Nokomis thanks to the promptness of the shipping department at Brooks Running!

The other thing was strictly up to me and I thought I might be pushing it if I tried to do it on Christmas Eve but I was also worried that it might be my only opportunity since we may be at our cabin for the New Year and after not being there for the last 8 or 9 months, I have no idea what my running trail looks like or if I even have one anymore so, on Christmas Eve, I headed out.

I hit the Legacy Trail a bit later than I actually wanted to but I got out there and anytime that I felt I was pushing myself or the pace was too fast I took a deep breath and slowed it down.  I put my phone in my pocket and I relaxed.  I purposely did not look at my phone.  I listened for the 5 mile alert from my app, turned around and kept going.  Only, when I reached the trail head near my house did I pull the phone from my pocket and that’s when I realized I only had a tenth of a mile to go!  I was ecstatic.

Double Digits.

Best Present Ever.  I didn’t need anything else.

I have to be honest, I was a bit sore a little later in the day and I was afraid to push it the next day so I walked an easy 3 miles on Christmas day and just stretched my legs and enjoyed the fresh air.  It felt amazing.

I’ve been on cloud 9 ever since.

On Christmas Day we took a little boat ride with the dogs.  Hank really wanted to fish.

Is the little dog actually gonna steal the fish? Nah, he aint gonna steal that fish. No way.

Hank steals the fish

That fish is GONE!

The dogs were exhausted after the boat and fishing trip and promptly passed out afterward.

I ran the trail again on Monday and again this morning and I was thinking about what the new year has in store for me, and my plans for the coming months, the year, and life in general.  You may remember about a month ago while running in Kapok park near my house a bobcat ran along side of me, well this morning up ahead of me, it was a Florida Panther!

fl. Panther

This time my pictures aren’t as good but I’m going to go back and I’m determined to get more.  I’m starting to think that these are my spirit animals.  They’re beautiful creatures and the fact that I keep seeing such elusive animals must mean something right?  It must!

I’m playing the lottery.

Don’t forget your fruitcakes!

Are you working this week?

How was your Holiday?

Friday, Fitbit Alta Review!

Y’all know I love my technical gadgets and I especially love all the data and the analytics that I glean from them.  I currently track data with my Garmin 620, my Fitbit Charge HR, my Apple Watch and my Runkeeper app, not that I’m obsessed with data or anything like that, hardly, I just like all the statistics and I love all the comparisons.

So that’s why, through my affiliation with the Tampa Bay Bloggers, when At & T contacted me and asked if I would like to review the Fitbit Alta I said sure!  Now I should mention that I was not paid for my opinion and I did not get to keep the Fitbit Alta but I did receive two complimentary tickets to the Lowry Park Zoo.    All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I wore the Fitbit Alta for about 10 days but right from the start I knew there were certain features that I was going to love far more than the Charge HR that I already own.  First let’s talk size, and here’s the best comparison that I can show you:

wearing two wearables

I always run like this.  That’s my Charge HR on the left and the Alta on the right.

The Alta is much smaller and more like a piece of jewelry than a fitness tracker.  It feels and looks more like a bracelet to me.  Mind you, this is coming from someone who’s used to wearing Garmin’s and such, but it feels quite dainty to me and that appeals to my feminine side so I like that.  I was a tiny bit concerned about the clasp at first as it was a tad hard to close and it didn’t feel secure.  For the first few hours I was terrified the thing was going to fall off of my wrist and I was going to lose it but the fear slowly subsided and I became more comfortable with it.

This is what the clasp looks like but I did find out there are security bands that you can purchase if your concerned about losing it.

Just like the Charge HR, the Alta comes in several different color choices and it also offers a lot of the same data, however instead of having to push a button on the side, with the Alta, you just turn your wrist towards you and it wakes up and shows you the time.  You tap on the display to see your stats.  With the HR you hit the button on the side.

Both the Alta and the Charge HR show you how many steps you’ve taken, track your sleep and can even sync with your phone.  I love the fact that the Alta, like the Charge HR can show you when someone’s calling. The Alta even shows you text messages which the Charge HR doesn’t do and  I might have gotten a little too comfortable with that feature because I really miss it now.

The battery life is about the same for both.  As a matter of fact, I found myself charging them both at the same time without any planning.  That’s a big bonus.  I wish they would have a talk with Apple and Garmin!

The main difference between the two is that the Alta doesn’t track heartrate or floors climbed and it cost about twenty dollars less. Depending on the athlete and what information they like to track you may want to keep that in mind if you plan on purchasing a Fitbit for someone for the holidays.

The perfect gift

She hopes it’s a FITBIT!  No, really, she does.

All the Fitbit’s make excellent gifts.  I got the Charge HR for Christmas last year and I have used it every day since.  I absolutely love it.  I also highly recommend the Fitbit Alta.  I’ve got three people in my family that I know it would be perfect for and you’ve still got time but you better get out there now.  Go!

Thanks to AT & T for allowing me to review it.

How many of you still have some shopping to do?

Do you have a Fitbit Alta?

Are you thinking of getting a Fitbit Alta or did you ask for one this year?
