Tomorrow afternoon we will finally know who’s going to represent USA in the marathon. The Olympic Trials are Saturday and you can watch them streaming live on NBC. I’ve mentioned before that I think Shalane and Desi will be neck and neck for first and second but third is up for grabs, in my opinion anyway.
Since Deena Kastor pulled out I think it’s going to come down to Kara Goucher, Serena Burla, Amy Cragg, Janet Bawcom, and Kellyn Taylor vying for third place. I have my favorites but here’s a quick rundown on some of the competitors.
Kara Goucher had a disappointing race at the NYC Marathon in 2014 but she came back strong in the half marathon this year winning both Rock N Roll San Diego and Big Sur. I just don’t know if she has it in her to pull off a top 3 in a full marathon. I hope she does, I just don’t know.
Serena Burla flies under the radar mostly but I’m telling you, she has the talent and the grit to pull off a top 3 spot. I’m rooting for her. This girl is determined and strong.
Janet Bawcom finished 5th in the 2012 Olympic Trials. She’s a strong runner and I don’t think you can underestimate her power. She’s an Olympic athlete and loaded with natural talent.
Kellyn Taylor made her debut this year with a 2:28:40 at the Chevron Houston Marathon. She also went on to run a 1:10:59 half marathon later in the year. I think Kellyn Taylor has a legitimate shot at placing in the top three and making the Olympic team. She’s a newbie but she’s already proven she can run a great race.
Amy Cragg has been training with Shalane Flanagan and this year she had a great race in Chicago with a 2:27:03 tying her current PR. She finished in fourth in the last trials and this could be her year.
It’s hard to say who will have a great race and who won’t because that’s really what it boils down to but I know one thing, the trials are going to be hella competitive this year and I can’t wait to watch.
Who are you routing for? Do you think my picks are way off?
Will you be watching live?
