The trip to Dog Town, my running trail, and a few surprise visitors

It was a loooooong weekend but we’re back. It’s sort of a shame it takes so long to get to our cabin because if it didn’t I’m sure we’d spend a heck of a lot more time there.
We left early Friday to head over to Holopaw and since the ride is so long, I brought along one of my favorite pastimes.

SudokuFortunately sudoku helped the time pass and It seemed like only minutes til we were driving down the trail roads.

dirt trailsAnd then we got to the cabin.

cabin at holopawThe dogs were pretty excited. Hank may be allergic to it, but he loves grass, and Boomer loves to run as fast as he can, all the way to the bed inside.

Hank in grassBoomer runningI was afraid that I might get a bit bored at the cabin so I brought along some things to keep me busy.

Coloring booksAfter all, I get really annoyed watching the Jacked up TV.

jacked up tvI did get to run a little bit while we were there. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the amount of miles I had planned.

runningPart of the reason was the fact that the trail was a bit rougher than normal, but the main reason was a pain that I’ve recently been having in the back of my ankle. It hurt quite bad on Saturday so I only got to run 2 miles but it seemed much better on Sunday.

How can I not run on my beautiful trail?

So I got up and ran 3 and half miles on Sunday. Just before I hit four miles, the top of my heel started to hurt right behind my ankle and so I decided to take the rest of the day off. I’ll be consulting a doctor if it isn’t better soon, (and by consulting a doctor, I mean, Google.) *Please note the sarcasm.  When you have an injury you should always see a doctor, and not WebMD but a real one.

While I wasn’t able to run as much as I wanted to we were able to hit up the mud hole and also visit our friend’s camp.

This is the mud hole, it looks peaceful here but most times it’s full of mud trucks and ATV’s.

the mud holeI took this picture at our friend’s camp.  I don’t know why but it’s one of my favorite shots from the weekend.

canoe in the desertOn Sunday MacGyver went over to help out a friend of ours and I painted the entire cabin. The dogs hung out with me. Hank was catching crickets and Boomer was taking it easy.

Nobody move, I see a cricket!

Stop taking pictures peasant and bring me more of the yoplait!

While I was painting this creature jumped out of the soffit and attacked me. Okay, maybe not attacked but it felt like it. I thought it was a squirrel or a cat but it was this guy.

tree frogSonofabitch, he scared the hell out of me and I fell right off the ladder. I did manage to finish the painting though and I also finished the camp signs.

We are now officially, Camp Dog Town!

Where are all the stencils when you need them?

Lords of Dog Town

We had to improvise but we now have signage!  And the cabin went from camo green to desert khaki, (or a nice shade of fresh baby poop depending on who you ask.)  I wanted pink but MacGyver refuses to let me bitch it up!

When it was time to leave we pulled down the game camera and I put the card in my computer to erase the images so we could put it back up. Fortunately before erasing them I quickly scrolled through them all. Imagine my shock when I saw these pictures.

The first deer came around the 7th of January.

And then about a month later, these guys showed up…

There were also a lot of night images where we couldn’t see what was there.  That’s why right before we left I poured out several cans of corn and I also dumped out all of the un-popped popcorn.

It’s all that I had and since the nearest feed store is over an hour away I had to improvise. I sure hope they come back.

I always hate leaving because it’s so peaceful here.

Tell me about your weekend, what did you do?
Ever had a pain in the back of your ankle near your heel? Wanna tell me about and save me a trip to the doctor?
When is the last time you saw a deer?

In a short time….I’ll be on my personal running trail.

By the time you read this I’ll probably already be on my way to Holopaw because we are headed to the cabin and it’s about a 3 hour drive.  And if it’s longer than that before you read this, I’ll probably be here:

Dog Town Trail

Dog Town Trail, here I come!

Because when you have your very own running trail, you go run on it whenever you can.  I am so excited to run with the pups on my trail.  It is named after them for goodness sake.

By the way before I get angry thinking about what they did again, here are the two cutest pics of my baby’s from my phone right now…

Somebody has to keep the bear warm!

Yesterday was hectic as all hell.  Not only did I have to finish up work early but I needed to pack for the weekend and we had early dinner plans with our good friends.  I thought about cancelling but they’ll be in Mexico for the next two months so we really wanted to see them.

We went to Nauti Nancy’s.

Nauti Nancy's

Doesn’t it look fun?

As always, it was delicious and we stayed out much longer than we planned.

The dogs were not as stoked about dinner as we were especially since we didn’t feed them before we left.  Well there’s that and Boomer hates his diet so he looks for opportunity wherever he can find it.  When we walked in the house last night, it looked like this….

trash can mishap

Boomer didn’t even have to turn the can over. He just jumped up on the can and picked out all the garbage. ALL of the garbage…

Now I”m pissed again!  Dammit.

Add an hour of clean up to a few hours of work and packing and I didn’t get to bed until after midnight.  I got up early this morning to get a six mile run in and now guess what I’m going to do on the way to Holopaw…

I’ll be sleeping!

I’ll catch up with you tomorrow.

What are your plans for the weekend?

Throwback Thursday – Weeki Wachee

Here’s a little Throwback Thursday for you. This was me at Weeki Wachee about 6 years ago.

on the river at Weeki Wachee

I look back at that picture now and I think about all the things we did that day. It was August of 2010 and MacGyver and I, along with some friends, went up to Weeki Wachee to swim in the springs and visit the manatees.

It was August and it was really hot in Florida but it was cool up there at the spring. This was a few years before MacGyver and I bought our vacation house so at that time we were still looking. We were taking pictures of houses for sale on the river and I remember imagining myself living there and getting to see manatees all day every day. I would still love to have a house there one day.

weeki wachee

Wouldn’t this be an awesome summer place?

I also remember playing with our friends children and wishing that the kid was there but he was off with friends of his own.

Me, MacGyver, little Aubrey and MacGyver’s Johnson.  (See what I did there?)

Between MacGyver and I and our friends we had three boats and we all followed each other down the river to the spring. At one point there was a ladder made of wooden boards nailed to a tree. There were quite a few people climbing the ladder and then using a rope to swing out into the river.

tree ladder

This did not look safe to me, I opted out.

We played at the springs for a while and we saw a ton of manatees. The water there is so cool that it’s one of the best places to be in the ridiculously hot summer months and it’s clear. You can see everything in the water. I was told that in the 1940’s Tarzan was filmed there.

Weeki Wachee

It’s beautiful here.

Can you see the manatee?

I don’t remember when it happened exactly but at some point on our way back to the entrance we heard someone yelling for help. We were behind the boat with the paramedics that carried the man to the waiting ambulance. He had swung from the rope hanging from the tree with the ladder made of boards. He didn’t land properly and he was badly injured. A little while later we made it back to the dock and I was speaking to a policemen who told me that the man had most likely broken his neck. I felt so sorry for his family.

boating on the river

The end of a long day.

We had been on the river for around 7 hours and it was around 5 or 6 in the evening as we were driving home. MacGyver and our friend Frank were in the front and I feel asleep in the back seat of our truck with Frank’s dog Sarah. It was the perfect ending to the day.

Later that night as I was posting the pictures to facebook I didn’t want to post any pictures of me. MacGyver said that I should and that they looked fine but I remember thinking that my stomach looked fat and my hair was a mess.

Weeki Wachee

Just riding down the river…

If only my stomach looked that good six years later and what I wouldn’t give to still have all that hair….

Tell me about something you did six years ago.
