Migraines, Could Salt be the Solution?

Sunday afternoon I got one of the worst migraines ever. I hate migraine headaches with a passion but they have been a part of my life for many, many years. Typically I get them once or twice a month but if I’m careful to avoid the triggers, I can sometimes stave off a bad one.

I had a major fail on Sunday because apparently I did not avoid the triggers. I ran 6 miles in the morning and then I hit up the beach and shortly after I got there I was on the hot mess express to Migraineville and there was no getting off until I reached my destination.

I was much better by late Sunday evening but I did not run on Monday and spent most of the day with these guys in the pool.

While we were hanging out lounging in the pool, my mother-in-law mentioned to me that she had read that low sodium can cause migraine headaches. I told her that I drank plenty of water but then she reminded me that drinking water doesn’t replace sodium and that when it’s really hot or you sweat a lot, you also lose sodium.  It made perfect sense and it is in fact true, you do lose sodium when you run and you sweat.

Last year during many of my long runs, I also got migraine headaches and salt was the one thing I never thought about. I just thought because I’m not a salty sweater, I had plenty of salt in my body but now I’m not so sure.

I wanted to test the theory so I tried to find a good source of electrolyte replenishment to consume after a hard or really sweaty workout.  I googled some, but what I found is lots of articles warning me of how bad all of those drinks are.  Most recommended plain water which is what I’m currently doing and may not be the optimal solution.

Now this has turned into quite the conundrum hasn’t it?

This morning I tried coconut water but let me be honest and just tell you straight out, I don’t like coconut water, period. It doesn’t matter what brand, I just don’t like it. When you expect something to taste like a pina colada and it doesn’t, no amount of convincing will get me to drink it again, ever, although I do not have a headache at all today, hmmmmm.  Coincidence or not?

So, I’ve got a few questions for you.

First, do you suffer from migraines after really hard or really sweaty workout?
Second, what do you use to replenish your electrolytes?

Happy Memorial Day 2015!

Happy Memorial Day!

Memorial Day 2015
First and foremost, thank you to all of those men and women who paid the ultimate price and gave their lives for our freedom. I am proud to be an American and I am forever grateful to you.

USA Today had a wonderful article with 10 historical facts about Labor day, if you have a chance, you should go read it.

We’ve been hanging out in the Venice area. It’s me, my Mom, MacGyver, my sister-in-law and her husband, oh, and we don’t want to forget the four dogs, Hank, Boomer, Shakespeare and Riley.

Memorial Day Bracelet

My SIL gave me this beautiful bracelet. It’s perfect for the day. Now if I can find something to wear with it…..

Today we are heading over to spend the day with MacGyver’s parents in the Englewood house. I’m looking forward to some pool time, some boating and most definitely, some fishing.

Here is a quick recap of the weekend so far in pictures mostly because I’m in lazy mode right now:

Legacy Trail Bridge

Of course I’ve been running on my favorite trail, the Legacy Trail.

Everyone kayaking

Running over the bridge I actually got a picture of MacGyver, my sister-in-law and her husband fishing on their kayaks and versa boards.

the Legacy Trail

A good portion of the trail is shaded which is nice when it’s almost 80 degrees at 6:30AM!

Casey Key

After running, my Mom, me and my SIL hit the beach at Casey Key.

Nokomis Beach

It’s beautiful here but I only lasted an hour and a half before I got a blistering migraine.

I spent the afternoon sleeping and nursing my migraine but I feel better now and it’s on to some more fun.

Kayaking in Florida

The boards are awaiting us in the backyard. (How do you like my fire pit?  I built it myself.)

Shower outdoor

If you’re ever in the area, we’ve got quite a few kayaks, paddleboards and even a canoe. And we have an outdoor shower! Drop on by.

Wherever you are today, I hope you have a nice holiday with family and friends and don’t forget about what this day means to us. We are very fortunate as a family not to have lost any members to any wars, although we have had many that were seriously wounded. We also honor them today.

If you know someone who has given their live for this country, you are welcome to leave a dedication below.

God Bless you all and Happy Memorial Day!

Friday Five – don’t buy these at Trader Joes

Yesterday morning I ran 3 miles…..outside! And they were fast-ish which made me all giddy inside. I was worried after running on the treadmill for a while with my industrial strength, super fan that I wouldn’t be able to handle the heat, but I did.

throw your hands in the air

Now, let’s talk about some things that happened this week.

First, let’s talk about Josh Duggar.  WTF? I don’t buy for a minute that these were ‘mistakes’ made during his teenage years. Something is wrong here, terribly wrong. I also find the details of Mr. Duggar’s exile for ‘training’ questionable at best. There are reports of multiple victims including his own sisters. This entire report sickens me.  If you haven’t heard about it, please click on the link above.

If you watch anything at all today, please take a few minutes to watch Rachael’s video. Rachael is suffering from anorexia and she is literally dying. She posted this video on YouTube because she really does want to get better, but without help, she won’t.

I warn you, it is painful to watch.

My prayers are with this girl and I really hope she makes it.

In truth I read this next article because the headline kind of grabbed my attention but I’m sharing it with you because it’s on point. I don’t think I’m alone when I say I tend to ignore pain from time to time but maybe, armed with this info, I’ll never ignore anything possibly life threatening and hopefully, neither will you.

This article pretty much sums up what I’ve been saying for a few years, there are some things you should never buy from Trader Joe’s.

Trader Joes

Wanna know what they are?  Click here.

And I’m going to end this post as I started it, talking about running.  Only, this conversation is more of a warning.

If you run in the Tampa Bay especially in the Lakeland area, be careful. A runner was attacked this week near Lake Hollingsworth Drive. When you’re out there running be aware of your surroundings, pay attention and take all of the necessary steps you can to ensure that you are safe.

I hope you have an awesome weekend and I hope you’re lucky enough to get 3 days off.
