Why blog comments are so important

I’ve been running off and on since I was in high school. Since that time I’ve really loved running but it wasn’t until 6 or 7 years ago that I began running consistently. Once I got serious about running and racing I started perusing the internet for any information I could find that would help me develop as a runner. That’s when I discovered running blogs.

I’ve read many running blogs over the years, some more consistent than others. I’ve commented on many of them and I have actually met a few of the people whose blogs I regularly read. I started my own blog because I wanted to share some of the things that happen to me when I’m out running and it kind of evolved from there. I really didn’t know if anyone would read and that didn’t really matter because it became cathartic in a sense, and so I kept with it and I have also continued to read blogs myself.

Sometimes it isn’t easy to find the time to read all of the blogs that I love but when I do, if I really like the post, I want the writer to know it and I take the time to leave a comment. Despite the fact that I run my own little business and do all of the marketing for MacGyver’s company, take care of two houses, and a cabin, have a husband, a kid, and two dogs, I will take the time to tell you that I like your post because I want you to know.

And that is also the very same reason that I take the time to reply to every single person who leaves a comment on my blog. Because I care. Because I know how busy you are and I know you have a life and a job and things that are far more important than my little ol’ running blog but yet, you take the time to leave a comment, for me. And regardless of whether we have the same opinion or not, that means something. So if it takes me 10 minutes or a week to respond it doesn’t matter, the point is, I will reply to you.

Your comments count

Granted, I don’t have hundreds of comments a day to sift through and I have been quite lucky in that most of the people who have commented on my blog have been super supportive, but even if that changed, I would continue to make an effort to reply to every single person even if it meant that I had to write fewer posts.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect every blogger out there to reply to every single commenter, it’s just something that I myself feel strongly about. Whether that changes in the future, who knows? But to be perfectly honest, I doubt it will because when you take the time to respond to me, I appreciate it and I want you to know.

Now, tell me anything you want to, anything at all.

  1. Together with havin much information in addition to posts do you run into almost any problems regarding plagorism as well as copyright violation? Our web-site provides extensive of unique content material We’ve sometimes designed myself or even outsourced however it genuine many it truly is gulping down upward all round the web with no my agreement. Do you know virtually any approaches to help reduce content material coming from getting cheated? I’d really thankyou.

  2. You are the only blogger who consistently sends a response which is cool. It makes your readers actually take the time to comment because there is never a doubt that you will see the comment. Keep up the great work. I look forward to your posts!

  3. I think anyone who would reply to a comment that was obviously written by a 12-year-old boy has to be pretty special, doncha think?

  4. First, I love your blog. You make it fun and interesting. Quick question, how do you maintain your level of being consistent on your blog? How far out do you plan your blog posts? I started my blog to help “bigger” people or folks that are overweight get into running. I am a clydesdale (tee hee), so I think it’s fun to motivate people to get into running. I have one flash with fame. Shalane Flanagan (one of my running idols), read this post and re-posted it. I could have died and gone to heaven, it was so awesome. It’s been difficult to maintain momentum, but I try. If you are interested in seeing the post, here it is: http://marathonmypersonaljourney.blogspot.com/2014/06/hanging-with-shalane-flanagan-lita-ford.html

    Keep up the great work!

    • Thanks Jim. I don’t really plan out any of my posts. I just write about what’s going on from day to day. Only if I’ve done a review or if I’m doing a race recap do I plan out the post, otherwise it’s just random ruminations about my day. I love your Shalane and Lita post, it was hilarious. 🙂

  5. I agree! I try to comment on other blogs too when I read them to let the blogger know that I have read their post and what I think about it! And I always try to respond to comments on mine. Thanks for a cool post!

  6. This was something that caught my attention when I first started following you. I’ve commented on blogs, even kind of spoke from the heart, and never received the smallest response. I would think, we’ll, I’m sure they’re just busy.. but that’s what I really like about you. You take the time to reply to everyone. 🙂

  7. I agree that comments are important to bloggers! Most readers are lurkers, so when someone does take the time to write a comment on your post, it’s best to respond back. 🙂

  8. I like to leave comments so you know I’m reading (although I haven’t the last few days to contradict myself).

Tell you something : San Diego was crazy dry. I felt like there wasn’t enough water stations (over a mile apart). And I wasn’t even running that much.

    • Awe, you’re the best. I don’t know if I could run in Cali right now, I’ve heard it’s been crazy hot! But I think I’d take dry over humid conditions… but you never know until your running in it… 🙂

  9. I try to comment on blogs/posts as much as I can and have some favourite bloggers that I follow. For my blog, I try hard to respond to all comments – similar to you, I don’t have all kinds but I do have a lot of comments that I appreciate and figure a simply reply is important.

    • I’m the same way. I do wish I had more time to comment on blogs that I really like but because I put a lot of thought into what I have to say, I don’t always do it. I tend to over-think things 😉

  10. Great thoughts. I always try to reply to each commenter on my blog as well. Right now my blog is pretty small and doesn’t get alot of comments so it’s fairly easy. I just enjoy letting people know I appeciate them taking time to leave a comment 🙂

    • Your welcome. I don’t always have time to visit everyone’s blog and its something I constantly struggle with but when it comes to comments I make the time. I don’t expect everyone to do that but for me it’s a personal thing. 🙂
