When long runs suck and vacationing in Venice.

We went down to our house in Venice over the weekend. MacGyver was looking forward to some fishing and I was looking forward to my long run on my beloved Legacy Trail.

I wish I could tell you it was stellar.

This is not the time I was hoping for…..

It wasn’t. Not every run is going to be a good run. I know that. Still, I won’t lie and tell you that I wasn’t disappointed in myself. I ran the first 5 miles at a very conservative pace but then I got a little overheated and so I walked. I walked for one full mile.

And I took some pictures.

And I tried really hard to get my head back in the game…

During the mile that I was walking, I had to convince myself that I could run back. My mind was playing games with me but fortunately I overcame and I finished 11 miles. I had 12 miles on my schedule but I settled with 11. I decided not to beat myself up over it and to just let it go, and that’s what I did.

Everybody has a bad run every now and then. I could analyze it and try to figure out why, which is what I would normally do, but I didn’t. Instead, I took Sunday off and this morning I ran 8 miles at a fairly decent pace and nailed my negative splits! It felt pretty good too 🙂

Besides running, we did a lot of other things this weekend. On Saturday, MacGyver and I went out for a few hours to fish the bay. When we got out there we saw a lot of people in kayaks fishing and some of them were fly fishing.

Fly fishing

We fished with lures and shrimp. Since MacGyver had caught some Jack Crevalle in the bay a few weeks earlier, that’s what we were going for. We’ve never eaten the Jack that we catch, we always throw them back but they’re a blast to catch. I caught a few but MacGyver caught several.

Jack Crevalle

The Jack we caught were between 5-15 pounds.

The best thing about Florida in December is that you don’t need a sweater!

Boating in Florida

It was around 80 degrees, sunny, and beautiful out on the boat!

After a few hours, I was ready to go back to the house. Fortunately our friend Danny was in town for the holidays so he met us at our dock and I went home while MacGyver and he went back out to fish for a few hours.

Sometime around 5pm our power went out and it stayed out until after 9pm. So, when MacGyver came home, I was starving. We decided to go to our favorite restaurant for the best soup EVER!

Fish Chowder

And to visit some of our favorite Sea life.

Sea Horses

I love sea horses!

On Sunday, MacGyver decided to go fishing again for a few hours. I tidied up the house a bit and I really wanted to leave my Christmas decorations up but since we don’t go down as often in the winter, I decided to take them all down.

Boomer misunderstood me. I said we need to ‘put away’ the decorations, not ‘play with’ the decorations.

Cutest Black Lab Ever

He’s so darn cute!

We got home last night and are getting back into the swing of things today. It sure is hard to get back to business after the holidays and a long weekend….but I’ll manage.

So, what did you do this weekend?

Did you take a long weekend because of the holiday?

What do you do when you have a bad run?

  1. So this is kind of crazy – I saw your comment about englewood/Venice on RER’s last post & being from Venice, clicked over to your blog to see where you ran around here. And I come across this post, and left coast is my restaurant! The chowder is my grandfathers recipe. It made my night to see you enjoy it

    • OMG, thank you so much for commenting! Left Coast Seafood is by far the absolute best restaurant, hands down. I seriously mean that. My in-laws just became seasonal residents and we took them there once, they now go at least 3 times a week! Your Grandfather’s recipe is incredible and my husband has been trying to replicate the fish chowder for over a year. (So far, he hasn’t succeeded, close but not quite.) I would absolutely love to meet you, do you run? Do you live in Venice?

  2. Don’t beat yourself up over a bad run. Yes, we all have them. As for me, I was in the gym continuing to train for my first figure competition in 2015 and relaxing at home. I do wish you could send some of that warm Florida weather up to SC.

  3. This weekend I went to the beach and returned some items. Gave myself a blood blister and a regular one so I’m not running now…not that it matters since the runs are bad!y lower back aches a lot now. even when walking. Today I did between 3.5 -4 miles walking at the park. It was hot today.
    Second Xmas tomorrow. Lol

  4. Hung out with the family and had a great time. Even though I have a sinus infection.

    No I worked on Friday.

I’ve had two bad running days in a row. I’m blaming it on large amounts of Mucinex and Augmentin. Has nothing to do with eating like a cow for a few days.
