The Weekend or A Comedy of Errors, same thing really.

It’s Monday already! Does it seem like the weekend just flew by? It sure feels that way to me but that’s probably not a bad thing. I don’t know about yours, but our weekend was a little ‘crazy with a side of nuts’ kind of weekend and it all started Friday afternoon……

Hanky oh nuts

MacGyver and I decided to go to the Venice house for the weekend, well actually, I decided and MacGyver went along. He didn’t really want to go but I can be pretty convincing when I really want to do something so that’s that. Anyway, I went out to pack up the car and just as I walked over to the car door, a bazillion wasps flew out of the trash and attacked me! I got stung 5 times in the ankle before I even had a chance to react.

wasp sting
Y’all, it hurt! No seriously, it was so painful. I contemplated not going to Venice for all of 5 seconds but then I was like, nah. Fortunately my allergies had been bothering me earlier in the day so I had taken a Benadryl, and I think that kept the swelling down quite a bit.

My pretty cankle

I’ve got a perty right cankle!

I did sport a serious cankle for most of the weekend, but since I’m only allergic to bees and not wasps, it wasn’t catastrophic. It could’ve been pretty bad…fortunately, there was no need to call Bear Grylls.

Bear Grylls

EWWWW, No, Just No Bear!

We finally got on the road and just 10 minutes into the drive it starting pouring, as in monsoon conditions, but we made it to Venice unscathed. We were there all of 15 minutes when I heard a rather large crash outside. No one was injured but my new tropical style umbrella took a beating as a very large limb fell off the tree in the backyard.

Needless to say when bedtime rolled around we were pretty glad to end the day.

Saturday morning, MacGyver and I decided to hit up some garage sales. We went to a community wide sale with about 60 individual sales. It was pure awesomeness and we had a blast. At the very last sale MacGyver and I were chit chatting with the homeowner when we heard a crash followed by a screeching sound that seemed to go on forever. A few seconds later we see an elderly woman pull over with a rather large scrape down the entire side of her car.

As we made our way towards her, Garage Sale Granny steps out and immediately asks us what happened. When we told her that she hit something, she said she realized that. So we asked her why she didn’t stop immediately if she knew she hit something and she said that she thought she had just clipped her bumper on the curb…

old lady drivers
But wait, it gets worse. We rounded the corner and the first thing we see….

is my car,

freshly scratched, with newly acquired dents.

my car with damage
It wasn’t too bad considering how bad her car was and I actually felt sorry for her, but as the homeowner pointed out, there are little signs that you should probably give up driving. This would be a sign!

We exchanged information and all that stuff and then MacGyver and I made our way back to the house. It was around noon and we decided to just go out and fish for a few hours.

I caught some snapper, a grouper and a trout and I was good to go and ready to turn back but MacGyver is never satisfied. When the fish are biting, it doesn’t matter what else is going on because MacGyver will continue to fish. And that is why we stayed out far past the time we should have……how far?

Like this….

The perfect storm
Okay, it was that bad, it felt like it was though. It was pouring and we were in the small boat with no cover so we had to haul ass to a bridge. It was thundering and lightning was crashing down all around my head. I’m just gonna go ahead and throw it out there, I was scared shitless and I cried like a little bitch.

Looking at the picture afterwards, it doesn’t look all that bad but I assure you, it was.

under a bridge

We had to hide out under the bridge for an hour and I was a soaking wet, cold mess.

After about an hour, we ventured out and the fish were still biting, so MacGyver would not take us home. We continued to fish for another hour. But when I saw lightning off in the distance I threatened to dismember him if he did not take us back. MacGyver drove us home. He fears no storm but he does fear the wrath of me!

Fortunately the rest of the night was uneventful and by the next morning the storm had passed and it was beautiful. We spent Sunday morning and early afternoon fishing and I caught a pretty sweet redfish and many other types of fish. I even caught a stingray. It was a great day out on the water mainly because I caught more fish than MacGyver and that always makes me happy. Competitive? No! Okay, a little…

We came home and did a little yard work, cleaned up the house and got ready to come home. As we loaded the car, MacGyver looked up at me and said, “You know, it looks like our luck has changed. This has been the perfect day.” And I was just glad nothing was trying to sting me.

As we were driving home, there was an accident on the interstate. We exited as soon as we saw it and reentered at the next onramp completely missing the entire thing and all the traffic associated with it. I started to believe him, our luck had changed.

I took a little nap with Hank in the front seat and woke up just in time to see the big bridge we cross heading into St. Pete towards home.

It wasn’t pretty….

Storm over bayside bridge
Yeah, hello storm.

Luck is overrated anyway!

So, how was your weekend?
What did you do?

Friday Favorites!

It’s that time again. The time when I get to tell you all about my favorite things for the week. And here we go…

Nike Running Skirt

This awesome skirt that I’ve been eyeing for months that I found for 33% off! I just ordered it. My thinking is that this skirt will help me get better faster because it is definitely a racing skirt, don’t ya think?

I’m also in love with my vintage Laura Ashley dishes which took me many, many months to acquire.

Laura Ashley Petite Fleur

I now have a complete service for 8. I still need a few accessory pieces but considering they’re from 1976, I think I’m pretty lucky to have found all the pieces that I have.

A favorite every week is these two guys!

Mommy's BoysThere isn’t a day that goes by that they don’t wake me up and get me out to exercise. Even though I can’t run, they make sure I keep my fitness level up there with lots of walks!

And you know how I love my estate sales! Well, in case you think you’ll never find anything great, here’s another favorite this week.

Second pair of Maui Jim's

Those are Maui Jim’s, the MJ Sport, which are awesome for running. I know this because MacGyver shelled out over 200 bucks for the pair I own. I paid $5 for this second pair…..AT AN ESTATE SALE! Hollah!

Vera Bradley makes really cute, affordable and functional purses. I have tons of them but lately this one is my favorite.

Very Bradley Purse

I carry it everywhere. It’s so easy to organize and I love me some organization, for real.

My Mom sent me this next thing a few months ago in my birthday present package. I didn’t use it for the longest time because I didn’t think I would like it.

Clinique Chubby Stick

I was wrong.

I love the Clinique chubby stick for eyes. Best. Thing. Ever. I love it so much in fact that I just ordered 3 more.

In case your wondering if MacGyver get’s mad about all my purchases….he doesn’t really know about all of them. I just sort of mix them all in with the other stuff. And he very rarely see’s the packages come to the house because I’ve got the mailman on my payroll. You’d be amazed at what a dozen of my chocolate covered peanut butter bon bons can do! 😉

And this my friends is my fave of the week….it’s the thing I’m using a lot while injured.

Hobie Kayak

That’s my Hobie Kayak. It’s got pedals. MacGyver has one too but his is bigger. I opted for a sail instead of the larger kayak but that was a mistake because MacGyver stole my sail. I’m not bitter or anything though. I stole his plugs, bwahahahahaha

And with that, I need to go because MacGyver is waiting on me. We’re taking a kayak lunch, as long as his isn’t at the bottom of the lake.

Have a great weekend.

Don’t forget to leave me a comment and tell me your favorites this week.

Food for the (runner’s) brain.

As you may or may not know, or maybe you don’t even care but it’s my blog so I’m telling you anyway, I’m a bit injured right now and it sucks, I won’t lie. I’m doing everything I can to recover and not to be a bitch in the process.

Doing everything I can also entails reading everything I can and arming myself with the information that I need to be a better and stronger runner. I don’t want to wind up in this boat again. If you’ve ever been in my position or if you just want to learn more about keeping yourself healthy and strong, you might enjoy these articles. These are some of the things that I’ve been reading about lately:

How to stay fast after 40…Oh, Lordy, this article really made me feel old at first, but hey, reality is reality, right? If you’re under 40 you can skip this one.

Fast over 40From the article:
“Overtraining in younger athletes generally results from an extended period of running too hard, too long, or a combination of both. In masters runners, a single instance of two hard workouts in a row without adequate recovery can do the same. That’s because aging slows healing in muscles and connective tissue, reduces some hormonal production (including Growth Hormone [GH or HGH], which activates fitness adaptation), and is inevitably accompanied by a loss in nervous system efficiency. Blast your body while it’s still struggling to recover from a previous workout, and we masters don’t bend, we break.”

When I am able to run again, I want to be faster and definitely stronger, this article had some great exercises for the hamstrings, some I’m already doing but others that I have been trying to incorporate into my strength training.

exercise to be better runnerFrom the article:
“If you’re a dedicated runner, you’ve probably got quads of steel. But to run farther and faster, it’s just as important to strengthen your hamstrings, according to a new study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. Why? It all comes down to your running economy—or how efficiently your body uses oxygen.” Read more here

I loved this next article a lot. It’s all about improving your running efficiency which is something I, (and I’m sure other runners), often overlook. This article is especially interesting to me because as someone with scoliosis, I’m already dealing with imbalances and poor form but I think this article would be a good read for any runner.

imrpove efficiencyFrom the Article:
“It’s not uncommon for runners to acquire muscle imbalances that create more work for the body when we ask it to run or move (inefficiency). In fact, even runners that strength-train regularly can fall victim to muscle weakness if they’re not addressing the imbalances directly.” Ream More Here

As runners, we know that core work is essential to our running and this article was great. I guess trying to achieve the longest plank isn’t all that helpful and I wasted quite a bit of time doing the wrong kind of planks!

Your doing the wrong planksFrom the Article:
“Stuart McGill (a top authority and researcher of low back pain and function) recommends holding a plank for 10 seconds, tops, followed by a brief, 1-to-2 seconds-long relaxation of the muscles.” Read more here

And last but not least, if you could buy workout clothes that actually tracked your workout like your fitbit or your garmin, would you buy them? I’m not sure what to think about this but coming soon there is a company that will be offering workout clothes that’ll actually tell you if you need to sweat a little more…
