The benadryl haze, a 50K and a #TeamJaimie update.

On Sunday I woke up with the most insane allergy attack, itchy, watery eyes and sneezing uncontrollably, it was ridiculous. By 9:00am I couldn’t take it anymore and I popped a couple of Benadryl. I cleaned my house until around 11:30am and that’s about the time I dozed off… inside the dishwasher, as I was unloading it. At that point I decided maybe I should take a little nap. The rest of the day was a cloud of cleaning and then napping, and sometimes cleaning and napping at the same.

Yesterday I was insanely busy and I didn’t have time to update so I thought I would use today’s post to get you all caught up on what’s going on in my neck of the woods.



This morning I ran 5.5 miles and I took along my old mp3 player. It has a built-in recorder and it occurred to me that it might be fun to record my thoughts along the run. I’m going to listen to it later and try to sort it out into a post for tomorrow. It should be quite interesting or disturbing or both.

I’ve starting researching training plans since deciding to do this ultra in January. I plan to start training in mid-July and since I’m not one of those people who can just run a 50K on a whim, I’m really putting a lot of time and effort into finding the right training plan for me. Because I’ve never run a 50K before and I really am clueless about where to begin but I’m going to give myself a full 6 months to train. I really want to be 100% prepared and enjoy the entire race, I mean, I wanna feel like this the whole time:

Fortunately, it’s only about 4 miles longer than an actual marathon and this ultra is going to be run on pavement rather than trails. For this reason I’m thinking of using one of the marathon training plans that include a long run of 26 miles just before the taper. Once I find one I like, I’ll post it in case you want to follow along. If you have any suggestions at all, I’d love to hear from you, especially if you’ve run an ultra before.

  1. I do Jeff Galloway’s plan and he does a 29 mile long run before the marathon. I will be happy to send it to you if you like. It’s 6 month also. I loved your random thoughts, I thought I was the only crazy one! 🙂

  2. I speak my thoughts into my phone during a run with the help of Siri and my headphones. Sometimes it works, most often it doesn’t. I can get really pissed at her when she dials someone in my contact list instead of writing to my to-do list.

  3. AGh I hate allergies! Especially the eyes itching…..yuck! I have never done an ultra, and even with how much I love running, not sure I want to/…..the marathon about killed me haha….even if it is just 4 miles more….I would never have made it. Ask me after Chicago 🙂

    I’ve never run an ultra..or marathon…or even a half. Haha I’m still working my way up. The summer months make it so hard to just get a good run in. I couldn’t imagine tying to train for a big race during summer.
    I’m still cheering you on! I think ultras are crazy but that’s the definition of a runner right? 😉

  5. Have never done an ultra. As for the heat it, it kills me. I’m almost a full minute per mile slower in the dog days of summer. I hate it. But I would feel worse if I didn’t run at all. The past two days have been rotten. I’m literally soaked to the core after 30 or 40 minute run.

    • I’m the same way. I saw a commercial the other day where it was describing runners and it said ‘the sweaty runner’ and everyone in the room looked right at me! It was so embarassing, but then again, at least I’m out there running. 🙂

  6. I woke up this morning at 4:30am to get my miles in. It was already 82 degrees!!! Eff me, because if you don’t get up to run it in the am, you’re stuck with 110 degrees in the pm – or you and the treadmill will have an impromptu date.

    • I hear you! It sucks so bad. And I just cant run in the heat of the day and well, last year the treadmill and I were in a serious relationship for almost 6 months but then he jacked up my shins and I broke up with his ass! I’ve never looked back.
