Monday Musings

Hey all! How are you? Hope you didn’t stay up too late partying after the Super Bowl.

I did watch the entire game and almost all of the commercials. I was very impressed with Bruno Mars, but the Broncos and the commercials, not so much.

I did love this commercial:

I’m still working on my recap of the half marathon this weekend. Afterall it was the Best Damn Race so I think it probably deserves the Best Damn Recap, don’t ya think?

I got a few comments and some emails from people who wanted to know more about my favorite tree so I did a little research and here’s what I found out.

The tree is called the Baranoff Tree and it is the oldest tree in Pinellas County, Florida. It’s hard to calculate the actual age of the tree but estimates are around 300 years old. The enormous live oak tree is named after Salem Baranoff, a doctor who owned the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa. The Live Oak Society of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation placed the tree on its historic registry of live oaks maintained since 1934. The tree is estimated to weigh 800 tons! If you ever come here, you really need to go running with me so I can show you this tree. It’s amazing.

Last weekend when we were in Venice with my in-laws, I got a picture of a white heron just as it started to fly off:

White Heron Mid Flight

I had no idea how wide their wing spans were, did you?

And I got a picture of this Osprey in a tree in the middle of a small Island:

They look similar to bald eagles. I always see Osprey nests on channel markers in the canal. I think they’re so magnificent.

And just in case you haven’t seen enough of my bird pictures, here’s another one:

This little guy was swimming near the Legacy Trail bridge and I snapped the pic as we rode by it in the boat.

You probably think I like birds a lot with all the pictures I take but honestly, I’m terrified of them and I only worship from afar, very afar.

And since we are obviously on the Random train this morning….

I have the most painful cut on my chest from the HRM on my Garmin. And here’s the most ridiculous part, the damn thing didn’t even record my heart rate during the half marathon on Saturday! It’s back in the box until I’m finished being mad at it.

That’s it, that’s all I got.

Now you tell me something random and make me laugh, okay?

  1. Something random: I have foggy yet happy childhood memories of a trip to Florida sometime in the 70s (yeah, I’m that old) and going to a restaurant called the Kapok Tree. I remember having “virgin cocktails” that were either a lurid red or a lurid blue, and they came in these tall souvenir glasses. (How’s that for random??)

    • That’s an awesome random! I used to go to the kapok tree as well AND the old kapok tree is located within a half mile from my house. I run kapok park every day! 🙂 Thanks for bringing back some good memories Sunny, you totally made my day!

  2. Something random… I made a great salad for lunch on Thursday – lettuce, cut up deli turkey and swiss cheese, bean sprouts, and goddess dressing. Well, I went out to lunch with a coworker and client that day and out to lunch with our office friday. SO, I opened up that salad today and one sprout was moldy. I actually picked off most of the sprouts and added avocado and smoked salmon and I’m eating it. I’m a little grossed out by it, but I’m also too lazy to go buy another lunch (which I know will be unhealthy). Let’s cross our fingers I’m not sick later 🙂 Please, judge me, am I gross?

      • Oh, I have to share this. At Christmas, my mom gave us a batch of homemade dog biscuits. My 10 year old niece asked what they were and when I told her and offered her one, she responded “ew, gross, I’m not eating dog treats.” I immediately bit a piece of one and ate it. She was SHOCKED! I’ve baked treats before and knew they were just flour and egg and carrot and the like. She could not believe I ate something meant for dogs! A memorable moment for sure! (I’ve since let my dogs eat the rest; they aren’t sweet, so I didn’t really enjoy them.)

        • Ooooh, you should try the trader joe’s peanut butter dog treats, not sweet but really good…uh, not that I would know or anything….LOL

  3. That’s a good tree! I like Banyan trees, Magnolia trees, Pines, and Oak trees myself… Really most trees. Palm trees are nice when you’re at the beach! 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

    • That one was funny. Those pics were actually taken with my phone. I wish I was good at photography then i could justify an expensive camera but alas, I am not…
